Conception: question?

Ladies-
I am a STM, I've been thru pregnancy before, and I thought I had a fairly good "grip" on this whole thang, but here I am, needing some clarification from my May Mommas!

I had an ultrasound yesterday in the ER because I had been experiencing some suspicious bleeding. Baby was found, heartbeat and all, and everything looks healthy right now. The ultrasound tech stated that I am 6wks 4days (due date of 05/26). Based on my LMP my due date would be 05/23...so, just a few days difference. The ultrasound must be more accurate, correct? I am curious as to when the heck this baby was conceived. Intimacy on both 08/26 and 08/27 doesnt add up to a due date of 05/26. I must be missing something, right?

Can anyone offer some insight? I feel so silly!

Re: Conception: question?

  • You don't necessarily conceive on the date you had sex. You're fertile window is about 5 days. I would go with what the ultrasound showed, it's just a few days difference.

  • It is possible for sperm to survive in the fallopian tube that long to make a May 26th due date. 6w4d yesterday would put your ovulation at 9/2, right?
  • @aamm04: I should've mentioned that I thought I had been tracking ovulation correctly, but it doesn't seem that was the case! Thanks for your response!

    Were you temping?
  • @aamm04: Was using OPK's.

  • @kbrands7: Could certainly be?...I thought my fertile window was different based on my use of OPK. I could've misread the results, however.
I have read mixed things on how long sperm can live inside the body... waiting for the egg, thanks!

OPKS predict when ovulation might occur but do not confirm ovulation. That's probably why your date doesn't match there's. Nothing to worry about!
  • Between pinning down exactly when you ovulate, exactly when the egg fertilizes, and then exactly when the fertilized egg implants, it's kind of hard to pinpoint the EXACT date.  All of those events could be within a span of a few days to almost a week, KWIM?

Totally nothing to worry about though :)

  • Early scans like that tend to be very, very accurate; they get less accurate as time goes on (e.g. into the 2nd and 3rd trimester). :) So I'd assume that you ovulated a little later than the OPK showed (it can be 48hrs after you see a positive, after all) and go with the scan.

  • The scan is much more accurate for reasons mentioned above.  There's no cause for concern if it's only a couple days different than what your LMP dating shows.

  • Unless ultrasound shows a fetus >7 days than original dates, usually won't change dates based on LMP

  • I would go with the ultrasound date
