Moms with potty training experience

Can you recommend your favorite brand of pull ups? We've been using the huggies brand (pull ups) but I'm not too thrilled with them and would rather save money if there is an off brand that works just as well. Thanks!!

I never used pull ups, went straight to underwear. To me, pull ups were too much like a diaper and my kids couldnt really feel the wetness.

This! I was a nanny for 7 years before having my own and potty trained 4 different kids. Pull ups got used at night, that was it. We would spend a few days playing naked at home with regular reminders to use the potty. By day 3 they were all doing it by themselves.
  • We didn't use pull-ups either...I figured it would be too confusing. We switched to underwear and stayed close to home so we could run to the potty when needed. She was potty trained in 3 days.
  • I haven't gone through it yet but my mom swears by the Gerber training pants. Her friends recently used them with her granddaughter with some success as well.
  • Agreed with everyone. I used pull ups and never saw a result. Going straight to panties really worked, extra laundry but totally worth it. And when we were at someone's house I just taught her to sit on the toilet backwards so she doesn't fall in.
  • Not trying to hijack your thread! Just wondering what age you all started potty training? I want to have two in diapers for the least amount of time as possible! Wondering when to start DD. She just turned 18 months on the first.
  • My twins never wore pull-ups during day, but at night we love Pampers Underjams...the huggies leaked so bad. They were not ready to start potty training til they were 2.5yrs...but once they started they got it right away.
  • Yes, I agree pull-ups are just confusing for kids. I did use one at night but put it over panties and panties over so my daughter didn't really notice it. I only did that for a week. I started at 2.5 years and it was easy. For months before I would ask her to tell me when she needed to go potty so she recognized the sensation and let her try, but no pressure. Make sure your child wakes up dry from bedtime before you begin. I know people who potty train before 2, but it seems they are just training themselves and have to help get them on the potty, wipe, etc. I'd rather change a diaper. If you think your child can get on a potty, recognize the sensation etc. by themselves maybe they are ready.

We are using the gerber underwear training pants when we are home but when we go somewhere we use the pull-ups and during naps and bedtime. Maybe I will try putting underwear on under the pull-ups and see if that helps with training during those times.

Several of the moms in my S13 BMB group are going through this now. Our babies are 2 years old (give or take) and the consensus is you have to wait until they are ready. Some of them are doing great, others are sort of doing it, some aren't trying at all right now. My DD likes to sit on her little potty (I got a chair that goes on top of the big potty) but it is more playing for her. We put her on it before and after bath time and she's peed once. She just likes to sit on it and pretend and wants toilet paper to wipe whether she's gone or not. We aren't really trying with her yet.

Totally depends on the kid. I've had kiddos ready at 18 months who picked it up in days and never had any problems. Around 2 is when you should start seeing signs of readiness. Being able to tell you she's peeing an interest in sitting on the potty, etc.
  • Skip the pull-ups and go right to undies. We tried to push my daughter to potty train and I will admit having her sit in the bathroom while we went prob did benefit her, but ultimately it was when she was ready to go that it just clicked and there were never accidents again. She was 2!
  • I am a FTM but I used to teach prek at the 2/3 stage where most people are potty training. I whole heartedly agree with PP. You should go straight to underwear. It can be a motivator, after a good week, you can take LO to the store and have them choose the cool undies that they like with their favorite characters on it and all that. Then tell them that they have to keep their cool undies dry or they will get super yucky and no one likes yucky undies. lols

  • I used Huggies, pampers and off brand, white cloud. they all were fine! I liked the off brand best though. They were fine to use but he never caught the going to the potty need until I took the pull ups away! So I only used them at night! ( i never began potty training until he consistantly was dry at nap! That was our indicator his muscles were ready) It worked great! First week I did laundry crazy because he had accidents. His problem was I don't want to stop playing to pee. he would go at designated times after meals, and bed times. But it was summer so he got water in between. It didn't matter that I asked or would take him any way. He still peed himself. But he learned it was cool to pee outside, I can see my pee! 1week! My Daughter was just easy easy. It was not a big deal. My son was harder. (He was way more stubborn!!!) It is finding what works for your kid. I never idolized rewards. I used praise more than anything. It was much easier after he was trained! (Minus the poop, that was beyond hard, but I took pants away entirely! Again!!! And still it was eh but still occasionally got rewards) but I'm doing more rewards now, only because of baby on the way. Enforcing big boy is awesome!!!
  • Target brand. I do use the nighttime Huggies though.
  • I only used pull ups at night or on long car rides but the brand is used was Pampers only bc i didn't like the characters on the others... Thomas the Train was the one that annoyed me the least lol

Truth be told I think they all work the same and shouldn't be used in the same was a diaper would. Maybe have kiddo pick out a fav? That way you can personalize the experience and say "Thomas doesn't like when you pee on his head" lol
  • Get rid of the pull ups!  My ex-husband insisted on using the pull ups and took FOREVER to potty train my son.  I was at my wits end and ex would not listen to me.  I couldn't go to underwear because my ex would use the pull ups and just confuse my son.  Took 2 years...2 YEARS!!  My son was 4 when he FINALLY got potty trained after my suggestion of getting rid of the pull ups.  I will NOT be using pull ups with this one.  I can see using them at night and I would recommend pampers.  I NEVER had luck with Huggies.  They always leaked for me.

  • Another mom here for straight to underwear.

Look into kickee pants training pants. They are more like underwear with a little extra along the middle.

Also, don't get frustrated if LO doesn't catch on right away. Just before DS turned 3, we did the whole underwear at home, and he still didn't catch on after a couple of days so we put him back in his Honest training pants (he used them like diapers).
A month later, just after he turned 3, I pulled out his underwear again and he was excited when he saw them. It clicked that day with him. He would only have a couple of accidents the first few months after that, but it was mostly him starting to go and realizing he was wetting himself.

We would use the kickee pants if we were out and about as they provided a teensy bit more protection for the clothes, but if LO completely empties, clothes will get wet if they are pressed against the trading pants.
