Infertility

first IVF cycle

I am currently on birth control pills for two weeks before I start my IVF meds.  I am on day 8 of the pill and started spotting today.  I just got over my period about 2 weeks ago.  Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: first IVF cycle

  • Hi there ! Yes I am on bcps right now as well waiting for ivf . I had pretty heavy spotting (almost period like) around two weeks in . It went away after a couple of days . I called the nurse and she wasn't concerned . She said if it persisted to call again . I don't think spotting from bc is that atypical . I hate birth control I'm just ready to start my other meds ! What day do you start yours ??

  • @mskeenan Are BCP necessary prior to IVF cycle? I have my beta on Wednesday from an IUI cycle and if negative I'm moving to IVF. I really hate BCP. I talked to my doctor a couple days ago and he didn't mention BCP.
  • @Rachd110 - It seems like most protocols either start with a course of Lupron or BCPs to suppress everything prior to starting stims.

  • @Rachd110 I'm not exactly sure . I know the number one reason I'm on it is because we are waiting to hear back from insurance and we needed time to order meds so the doc needed to hold me off before starting a normal cycle . He did say, though , that bc is good for "calming things down " before Ivf ... Whatever that means . Hopefully you don't have to go on it . I hope it's not standard protocol !

@Rachd110 I tried to get around OCPs too but no dice. My REs office only waives it if you've had severe side effects prior. I was able to be on it for only two weeks. You could be on a long protocol (Lupron) or antagonist protocol (no down regulators just gonodropins) and either way they will include ~3 weeks of OCPs.

They said the main reason for use is to make every follicle the same size so there are no lead follicles going into your stim cycle. That way you can get as many as possible growing rather than just a few. It does suck, I had bad headaches and hated the delay, but it was great to see a high response after.
  • Hi ladies,
i am currently taking BCP and am starting my 3rd week. I have been spotting now for several days so I called my doctor yesterday .although i knew it was normal to spot I wasn't sure it was normal that it was continuing for so long or that it was coming out very dark. The doctor said that it was normal. He said some people will spot for 3 months if they are using it as a contraceptive. SInce thats not the reason we are using it he said I should not be alarmed if the spotting continues the few weeks I will be taking it.
The doctor said he knows its annoying but that it happens to 50% of women.
Not enjoying the side affects of these pills at all. At times I feel very nauseas and very irritable. Anyone else have the same side effects? I am a nervous about how I will feel once we start the next step of the process.

Yes. I'm sorry you're having side effects!

I also had bad headaches (in addition to some spotting, nausea, and irritability.) :/ besides PIO, it's the only IVF med that gave me notice lie side effects which I found ironic.
  • Yes I have been nauseous and irritable from my pills . And I have gained 10 pounds in three weeks with no change to my diet . Ugh !!

  • @mskeenan I will be starting my med on the 9th. Spotting has stopped but I am still pretty moody :(
  • Yes, it is normal...happened to me too!
  • I'd love to hear how your 1st cycle goes. We have an appointment at the end of the month to start the IVF process as well. So excited / nervous :)
  • I took a dollar store HPT this morning and it was negative. My beta is on Wednesday, but I'm counting myself out. Looks like I'll be moving on to IVF. I'm going to ask about birth control pills. I hope I don't have to take them.
  • My doctor said the BCP are just to get all the follicles back down to the same size. That way when I start stims, they will be about the same size.
