Re: Working out ? Moms with experience

  • I have been lifting weights for the last 3 years as well through pregnancy (keeping up to 90% of my strength) up until 2 days before giving birth. I was cleared to start exercising again 2 weeks ago. From my personal experience I wasn't able to jump right back into my workouts where I left off. I lost almost 50% of my strength having 6 weeks off on top of being extremely sore the next day. It's much more challenging holding a baby after killing your arms and shoulders in the gym or walking around your house for hours comforting a fussy baby after an intense leg day. I personally suggest starting out slow the first couple weeks and slowly building up strength and intensity...that's what I'm doing anyways. Good luck!

  • Agreed. At 4 wks I went back to kickboxing which is pretty intense. I was working out 2 wks before I gave birth. Getting back into it was hard ( I felt so out of shape) so I took it at my own pace. After 2 weeks I can tell I am building up insurance. So I say do your thing just watch how you are feeling.
  • I say go for it, but ease back into it and be honest with yourself about how ready you are.  A lot of times I think doctors say that kind of stuff as a CYA.  I wouldn't jump back into your full pre-pregnancy workout on day one, but try a few things and see how you feel the next day.
  • Listen to your body.
According to my midwife, if you do crunches/sit ups before your abs come fully back to center you can actually build the muscle up to where they stay separated... Just proceed with caution.

  • My doc said not to go fully back but do some and see how I feel before increasing. Baby steps...lol
  • What reason did they give for waiting 12 weeks? (C-section or some reason?) My doctors cleared me for activity at 6 weeks. But don't expect to feel the same as you did before, there will be an adjustment period. My suggestion is start slow and see how your body reacts. If you're feeling good then gradually increase.

  • I think you could ease into it. I had a c section and started walking at 4 weeks and it was very tiring. By 6 weeks I felt substantially better and by 8 weeks I felt back to normal. So I've started body weight training this week and I'm definitely way out of shape becaue i sfopped working out at 20 weeks pregnant due to complications but I do feel safe doing it. I'm sore as hell though. Do make sure your abs are ready though. As PP mentioned your abs can separate when you are pregnant (diastasis recti) and this happens to about 2/3 of pregnant women. Certain abdominal exercises can be very bad if you have this. I'm not sure why OB's just clear women for exercise at 6 weeks post partum without screening for this..
  • I've been working out since week 3. I had an easy recovery and my doctor was fine with it. I think you should make sure you consult with your doctor before but if you feel fine I don't see why you can't start.

  • My doctor was fine with working out but advised me to avoid high impact (running, plyo, jumping) until 12 weeks pp.
