2nd Trimester

Having trouble side sleeping

So I'm 18 weeks and I've been trying to convert to side sleeping since I started to get a bump. It's so hard! My hip and shoulder get sore and I wake up in pain. It's the same kind of pain you get from a big bruise. Has this happened to anyone else or do you know of any ways to alleviate the pain? I've tried different pillows, pregnancy pillows, and even bought a softer bed.

Re: Having trouble side sleeping

  • I have a normal (not maternity) good quality memory foam pillow I put sideways and another under my head. I kind of semi lay on my side and on my tummy, this works for me mostly. I often find myself on my back through the night though...

  • I sleep with a fortress of pillows. A pillow between my knees and a pillow behind me for support usually does the trick thougb. I switched to this after trying out the boppy pregnancy pillow for a while, so uncomfortable!
  • It has been hard on my shoulders and hips too. I have found though that a firmer bed it better than a softer one, it give more support
  • I purchased a memory foam mattress topper that works for me.
  • I've been having a really hard time too. Getting a maternity pillow helped, but I still wake up with sore hips all the time. Also the arm I'm laying on keeps falling asleep which wakes me up every few hours. Very annoying
  • I just had a regular body pillow when I was pregnant.  side sleeping was easier when I could use that to prop up my belly as it got bigger, and put it between my knees.  I actually still sleep with it because it really helped my back (I used to be a stomach sleeper and that caused me to have some low back issues).  I did have the "arm falling asleep" issue while pregnant (though not anymore for some reason), so I switched sides throughout the night.

It's fine to sleep on your back right now.  You would wake up in pain from sleeping on your back well before the baby would be affected by it.  And it's usually not dangerous until third tri.  You can be on your back for small amounts of time throughout pregnancy.  just flip over when it gets uncomfortable.

  • I will be 2nd trimester this weekend, but I have a hard time sleeping on my side, too.  I normally found it very comfy until I had gallbladder surgery earlier this summer. It now feels like my diaphragm area is pulling.   For me, it's not really due to being pregnant.  Well, except I find that if I'm gassy, I get gas pains when on my side.  I prop my back up with fairly flat pillow so I'm sort of on my side, but have the support of pillows behind me.
  • Whenever my hips start hurting from side sleeping I usually just piled all my pillows and sleep semi reclined. That helps a lot to take the pressure off my hips.
  • I got a body pillow from target and it was the best thing ever. I was a right side sleeper before pregnancy but now I sleep on my left. I like to cuddle the pillow and it has helped me so much. My husband is jealous lol
