Questions you wished you had asked....

At your first prenatal visit! I feel like I have a million questions to ask my OB but then I know something will slip my mind.

What are some questions you ladies forgot to ask at the first visit or info you wish you had known for the upcoming months?

Re: Questions you wished you had asked....

  • I can't think of any specific questions at the moment, but I started making a note on my phone every time I thought of something so I could look it over when I went to my appointments.

  • I wish I had asked whether pain medications like Advil or Ibuprofin are okay to take. I have a bad back and I get pretty sore sometimes. I don't think I'd take anything anyways, though. The thought of taking meds has me really paranoid right now.

They gave me a list at my first appointment and it said Tylenol is ok.

  • @kns1988 there are no NSAIDs (aleve, Advil, Motrin, ibuprofen, naproxen) that are safe during pregnancy. It can cause heart defects. The only approved pain reliever is Tylenol while pregnant.

Thank you! I'm glad I played it safe then. I haven't been taking anything. Just icing as needed.

  • If you have allergies, ask about meds. I get BAD seasonal allergies made a million times worse with pregnancy, and OTC meds won't cut it for me. I didn't ask for a prescription allergy med this past spring when I was pregnant and suffered for it. Finally saw an allergist who hooked me up with awesome, pregnancy-safe meds, but I wish I had gotten them much earlier.
  • With my first pregnancy, I made a list every time I came up with a question. Unfortunately I was so sick when I went in to the doctor that I didn't most anything on that list bc I couldn't focus on anything.

Critical things for me were medications that were safe and what screenings were available/recommended and when.

  • *** Loss mentioned briefly ***

I'd recommend the list that TB provides and add any questions you have to it, and PRINT the list to bring with you. I did that and wrote down the answers I got which really helped my forgetful pregnancy brain later when I couldn't remember a thing my doc said. Haha.

One thing I wish I'd asked though was if they had a welcome guide with a list of essentials: what meds, foods are safe, what aren't, weight gain info, symptoms to expect, etc. I got a book like that with an appointment tracker my first pregnancy then threw it away when I lost the baby and I really regret that.

  • I wished I'd asked more about / insisted on genetic testing: they screened my blood to see if i am a CF carrier, but not to see if I am a Tay Sachs carrier, which is the one I'm most worried about. They are both blood tests! But I guess since I'm already pregnant there's no reason not to wait? Then why screen for Cystic Fibrosis?

    So confused.
  • I wish they had given me more literature about the genetic testing. It sounds like it's a different blood draw for each test for each disease and I'm so scared of needles. My first appointment blood draw wasn't too bad, but I just had so much anxiety about it.  I feel like the whole appointment was a blur because there was so much happening and so much information. I also forgot to ask my doctor's opinion about caffeine. I've read under 200 mg is ok, but just wanted to verify with her. I've tried to quit but I get really horrible headaches if I do.
