Second time (also third, forth, etc) momma's - how is this pregnancy different so far?

Hey ladies! This is baby #2 for me and although it's early, I was puking my guts out all day all the time pretty much from day 1 when I was pregnant with my son. I also had zero food cravings and was emotionally completely myself.

This time around I haven't thrown up yet (I've felt a bit dizzy, that's it so far), but I'm an emotional mess and my food cravings are out of this world! I was crying hysterically while eating ribs 2 nights ago.

So, the fun question - how different is this pregnancy so far, this early on?

Re: Second time (also third, forth, etc) momma's - how is this pregnancy different so far?

  • With my first my pregnancy was super easy - I just ate all the time and gained an excessive amount of weight :(

With this one so far I am feeling more sick but no puking and am uncomfortable already in the way I sit / lay down. I'm way more tired. I prefer carbonated / fizzy water Trying to be much more careful on my food choices but it's getting hard. I just wanna eat everything Carby!!!

  • This is my 4th and so far it's been quite similar to the others.  Nausea is already improving and that's my primary symptom with all of them.

  • My apologies. I searched and didn't see this one. I'm just getting the hang of the message boards again.

  • So far my nausea hasn't been too bad. I had ms and vomiting from 6-12 weeks with my first pregnancy. I'm trying to keep up with snacks and water and so far *knock on wood* it has been helping a lot. My boobs on the other hand have been much more tender this time around.

  • Unlike my other pregnancies I have heartburn so bad that I've gone through my second bottle of Tums, I use to tolerate spices hot sauce etc but it kills me now yet I'm Jamaican I need it so I double up on Tums them enjoy them pay the price oh well.
  • With my son, everything was textbook until the beginning of the third trimester.

With this one, I have already been in the hospital for dehydration and HG so I think we are all set!

  • My first two pregnancy were pretty easy (#1-Girl #2-Boy). This time I've been a lot more sick and exhausted.

  • All day constant nausea with this once since 4 weeks - now 7+3. First one I only got MS from week 8 till week 11. Never knew how lucky I got it with DD!

It's really neat to hear how pregnancies differ each time.

Also, I will say, it doesn't feel "real" this time. Last time from the minute I saw that pink line it's all I thought about. This time I seem to forget I'm even knocked up most of the time. haha.
    And this! lol

  • So far, I'm more mood-swingy this time and the RLP started up way earlier. Otherwise, about the same!

  • I'll be 9 weeks tomorrow. This one is fairly different so far. My all-day sickness started several weeks sooner, but has been much less severe this time. Rather than a constant sea-sick feeling with vomiting, I have a hung-over feeling sans vomit. My RLP started almost immediately-- it's one of the reasons I tested early rather than waiting for a missed period. I'm moodier this time. I'm significantly less hungry than with  my son-- by this point with DS, I had already gained at least 5 pounds because I was constantly hungry; this time I eat often, but can only stand small portions at a time and have only gained a pound. Other symptoms are about the same.
  • I'm way more nauseous this time than the first 2 times and I don't want to eat. My first pregnancy I would be hungry then eat then feel a little sick, 2nd I was starving all the time, this time I want nothing to do with food and I have to force myself to eat something!
  • With DD, I was nauseous from the second my test turned positive until about 14 weeks. I could barely eat anything and struggled to get off the couch.

This time I've been queasy a few times. I'm able to get up and chase DD but it's not my favorite activity because my body is kind of achy, especially my back. Dr. Google told me that it's common to have back pain earlier with second pregnancies? So there's that. Sometimes I make myself nervous because I think too much about the morning sickness and that is probably what makes me feel queasy. Have I mentioned I'm crazy? ;)

  • With my first I worked 2 full time jobs , never had a single issue or even really felt pregnant until about 6 months when the back pain and swollen feet kicked in...
However this pregnancy, my whole body hurts. I get headaches easily, boobs hurt, back hurts, I got my first UTI-which got into my kidney ): (gone now thankfully!!!) I pee all the time! LO thinks my bladder is a play toy Lol.

But I do feel like I'm getting the 'ultimate' pregnancy experience so no complaints here :) I'm just ready to see LO again !!
  •          This is my third pregnancy and so far it's exactly like last time when I was carrying DD. I have a hunch that this is a girl just because of the similarities. I'm still nauseous off and on at 14 weeks and have frequent headaches. My breasts are still sore and swollen and I've already gained a lot of weight. I'm an emotional mess most of the time and completely exhausted!
When I was pregnant with my DS I hardly had any symptoms.  I wasn't sick or moody. I did have a hard time in the third trimester though with blood pressure issues and terrible swelling. It does seems like it gets harder with each pregnancy so I'm positive this is my last!
  • This pregnancy is pretty identical to my first. I just forgot how bad the acid reflux and morning sickness is. I remember the fatigue in the first trimester but it seems to linger on in my second trimester. Maybe I am just exhausted because I am chasing a 4 year old.

  • They've been pretty similar in terms of sickness, exhaustion, food aversions. The only real differences I've noticed are getting headaches starting in 2nd tri and being angry. I never had any anger problems with DD.
  • First Tri I was sick sick sick and tired tired tired. I don't remember having this much energy in my second tri with DD. I didn't have dental problems until I was BFing DD and I had to have a root canal in my first tri with this one. I'm showing a whole lot earlier than with DD. I have food aversions this time around where I didn't with DD. Heartburn didn't come until third tri with DD and it's here at night already. I don't remember having this much discharge (gross) but doc says it's bc since I've already given birth once my cervix is lower making it easier for the discharge to come out (gross). My hair isn't growing at all where with DD my hair grew so long so quick. I'm not as swollen this time around (yet). I've only gained 1lbs where with DD by second tri I gained 10-12lbs. I don't like sweets too much right now and with DD I loved some chocolate milk and oranges. I don't want coffee and with DD I had to be very conscious of how much caffeine I had bc I would crave it. I'm getting up in the night 3-4 times to pee where that didn't happen until third tri with DD. This pregnancy is basically completely different lol.

Same here. Isn't that crazy? Boggles my brain. Why are they so different?
  • @araecasey I'm convinced it's a boy. Maybe that's it? I don't know. I know people say all pg are different but I mean there are rarely similarities.

  • This is pregnancy #2 for me.

Physically, my symptoms are pretty much the same as last time. I'm more exhausted from chasing around a toddler all day but that's the only difference there.

The biggest difference this time around is how much I don't even think about being pregnant. For my first, my pregnancy was always at the forefront of my mind. I was on "The Bump" constantly, shopping for baby things, buying maternity clothes...I was thinking about it constantly.

This time around, I find myself thinking more about my toddler. How he's going to adjust and just trying to savor these last couple of months together. I'm on a 4-year maternity leave (unpaid of course) and am the primary caregiver. The past couple of years with my son have been the best years of my life and have been extremely precious to me so I'm just focusing on staying in the moment with him and trying to give him 100%.

That said, I'm so excited for the arrival of our little guy.
  • Mine is also fairly different this time around. Some things like hip looseness, rlp, and Braxton Hicks contractions are just showing up much sooner. Other things are new to me this pregnancy like somewhat worsened asthma and migraines. My MS was different-- first was sea-sickness and vomiting, this one felt like a perpetual hangover but no significant vomiting. My cravings and aversions have been different as well (except for wanting spicy food...but I always want that even when I'm not pregnant). I've gained less weight this time around so far than I did with DS as well. Fatigue, first detectable baby movement, energy spurts, and sex drive pattern are all about the same as last time. I'm hoping I have an easier third trimester this time since the second has been more difficult so far.

I feel much more sickness this time around.  I have severe food aversions and food in general of all types is not good.  Last pregnancy I could eat pretty much just fine and if I felt sick I could eat goldfish crackers like nothing else and felt better.  I tried this pregnancy and it literally felt like I was attempting to eat straight up cardboard in a package.
My energy is zapped much more (I think that has to do with chasing #1 who is a very busy toddler and stopped napping months ago).
I just started really showing (tiny bump that doesn't go away) at 16 weeks.  Last pregnancy it took much longer to show as a FTM.
This pregnancy instead of writing in belly books and reading all about pregnancy, when you are expecting, breastfeeding books, etc. I am getting tons of toddler geared books about becoming a sibling for my little one and spending lots of time focusing completely on them and helping them transition into this next phase.
Half the time I forget what week of pregnancy I am even in.  I really have no idea and I think I have told people wrong.  To even write this post I had to look it up to know.  Last time around I could tell you the week and day on the spot anytime where I was in the pregnancy.
  • Like @goatgirlnyc I find that I almost forget I am pregnant! I am so focused on my 2 year old, my job, the house etc that I will suddenly get super weird-ed out when I feel the nugget move or have MS, then remember "Oh yeah, I'm pregnant!" I think the fact that MH is all of a sudden really into rubbing my belly and talking to LO makes it so much more real. With my first pregnancy, I was just obsessed with all things related to pregnancy and babies. Now, I mostly think about how the new baby will fit into our family, how to prepare my son, how to arrange their shared room, my work plan over the summer etc.

Physically, much more MS and acid reflux and definitely more exhausted! But, I am actually not showing as much as I did with my son...it feels like this nugget is hiding! By this point with my son, it was all hanging out, but maybe that was because it was getting warmer out so I was wearing tighter, lighter clothes, whereas the sweater dresses and layered knits are hiding the bump this time. Also, my diet is all out of whack because instead of cooking for MH and myself, I am also making food for my son and for whatever reason, chicken nuggets, tater tots, and mac n' cheese sound so much better than seared salmon and roasted veggies.

  • This pregnancy feels EXACTLY THE SAME as my first.  Right down to starting with morning sickness on Day 1 of Week 5 and still going strong (I'm 15 weeks now). Same cravings too.
  • This is my 4th pregnancy. Lost my 3rd at 5 weeks. I have 2 boys and I had some strong moments of morning sickness with both of them. One if which I pulled up the whole bathroom sink with a powerful heave of bile. This pregnancy on the other hand, is quite different. Not only am I throwing up all day, I ended up passing out at school with just a whiff of germx, ending up in the emergency room and a week of bedrest!!! Needless to say, I think God gave in to my relentless prayers because the doctor said he is 90% sure it is my FIRST baby girl! Other things that have clued me...is losing hair instead of it growing, not gaining any weight and of course the extreme fatigue and weakness...all of which I had never experienced with my boys!
  • This is my second pregnancy and we're Team Green (again). My first pregnancy I was tired, fought morning sickness, and my breast hurt so much I couldn't even let the shower run on them, it was too painful. Now I'm 14 weeks and I was terrified the entire first trimester because I felt so good and normal that I was convinced something was wrong! I'm always tired but my daughter is a crazy 22 month old so I can't tell pregnancy tired from toddler mom tired, lol. Oh! And I felt this baby move starting last week, when with my daughter I was at least 18-20 weeks before I felt movement.

The only similarities bergen pregnancies right now are an insatiable craving for chorizo tacos and cans of Vernors ginger ale :)
