Diaper Rash... Ouch! Need Advice.

First Time Mom and baby boy (4 1/2 weeks old) has a mean looking diaper rash right around his butt. It is bright red and pretty painful for the little guy anytime he has a BM. We're experimenting with different pastes (Boudreaux's and now Triple Butt Paste). Any advice on making him feel better while it heals? How long until it's better for you other mamas?

  • I've heard triple butt is the best. Maybe try more tummy time so he's not on the bottom?

  • Whenever my older daughter got a diaper rash, I stopped using wipes until it cleared up. Just used cotton pads with water. Works in a day or two.

  • We also stop using wipes and use wash cloths instead, much more gentle.  Diaper free time is a must, you can lay him down on mattress pads and just let him air out for awhile.  I like the Maximum Strength Butt Paste in the red tube, it is the only thing that cleared up DS's nasty burns when he had a food intolerance.
  • We rinse him during the day instead of wiping. Just use a soft cloth and a bit of gentle soap, then let him air dry. At night i use wipes i made using coconut oil, a bit of natural soap and water. He has cleared up pretty good now.
  • When our little guy has a rash, we switch the wipes out for Water Wipes. That way, you have the convenience of a wipe, but the gentleness of water. The wipes are 99% just water and they help clear the diaper rash right up. Target carries them. Also, we dab the bottom, not actually "wipe". Pair that with air time for the bottom and some red tube Boudreaux, and you are good to go
  • Our little guy had a diaper rash a few weeks ago. We used a wet paper towel instead of wipes until it went away, patted dry with a dry paper towel, then applied Boudreaux's Natural Butt Paste and the rash cleared up within 3 days or so.
  • My lil guy had a diaper rash as well from acid poop. I breastfeed my son. Dr. recommended to use warm water with 2 teaspoon of baking soda to rinse of the bum & to not use wipes until the rash is gone. Use soft wash cloth or Kleenex and pat dry. You can also let your lil one for a few minutes in the warm water with the baking soda.
  • Thank you, guys!! It is so hard to see my baby in pain. I'm definitely going to look into the water wipes once this clears up since he seems to have an extra sensitive tushie.
  • Baking soda in bath water really helps! I usually do that, then use cloth wipes with plain water for changes, and Dimpleskins boo boo goo. This baby has only gotten red bum, but DD1 had open sores when teething and it cleared up really quickly!

  • Baking soda baths, diaper free time ans warm water on a washcloth are all what I'd do. I got desperate last year with a really bad rash and someone recommended browning flour, letting it cool and applying that. It seems bizarre but worked so well.
  • How long has he had the rash? LOs can get some pretty nasty rashes that sometimes need more than the usual diaper creams. DD#1 got a yeast infection that I had to treat with Monistat. DD#2 just got over a bacterial infection.

It's probably fine, but keep an eye on it. If it sticks around or looks like it has open sores, call your pedi. Not to be an alarmist, but just something to keep in the back of your head. Other than that, ditto what most other posters said, especially the diaper free time. Make sure to soak it in the bath, too, if you give your LO regular baths.
