Dental Issues

I had really bad dental issues when pg with DD. I had to get a root canal with no anesthesia (not fun) and they said it's due to a Vitamin D deficiency. I woke up last night with horrid horrid pain in my tooth. Of course this happens on the weekend when I can't get into the dentist. I just know I'm going to have to get another root canal. Anyone else have this awesome symptom with pg?

Re: Dental Issues

  • Yes ! Last time I was pregnant my wisdom teeth started acting up and my teeth started cracking. Babies take a crazy toll on your dental health
  • Loading the player...
  • This is my first pregnancy but I'm waiting till Monday to call the dentist as well apparently I cracked one of my teeth in my sleep and I was actually curious to if they would do anything with me being in the first trimester or would I have to go thru the pain till after I reach the second trimester.. sorry to hear that your I'm pain root canals are no fun all sending positive vibes your way ladies!
  • Verdict is in. Root canal Monday....No anesthesia. I have to raise my hand when I start feeling it.

  • That sucks!!! Hopefully you don't feel too bad and this is the only painful visit you'll have
  • @doozer1345 that sucks. If it makes you feel better, when I wasn't pregnant, I had to have a cavity filled (almost had to have a root canal) and they ended up giving me 7 shots because I could still feel everything. Good luck on Monday.

Is the no anesthesia a pregnancy thing or personal reasons? Just curious... & terrified

Can't wait to go to the dentist on Wednesday for my cleaning. I love when ppl clean my teeth. It's like the equivalent of a spa treatment for me.

During my last pregnancy the dentist (or tech. I forget) said to come more frequently while you're pregnant bc baby causes dental issues. I said no bc my insurance only covers 2 cleanings a year. They said its coded differently when ur preg so more cleanings are covered. I have not verified this but I want to ask again Wednesday. I have MetLife
  • Not even local anesthesia? Like numbing shots? Those were okay while I was breastfeeding, so I doubt most doctors wouldn't allow them when you're pregnant. I would call around and find someone else who would let you have it.

Oh man, that's rough. Good luck and I hope it isn't too bad! I'm one of those people who has a lot of dental issues no matter how well I take care of my teeth - I even go for 4 cleanings a year, 2 of which are out of pocket. I'm 26 and I've had filings in almost every tooth and at least 4 root canals. I'm anticipating some dental issues during pregnancy... is there not enough vitamin D in the prenatal?

  • @mariaalene definitely not my personal choice haha. It's due to being pg. Same goes when you're nursing. I've read dental issues effects 50% of pg women. I guess I'm just lucky :(

  • @katykatykaty

only numbing shots are allowed but they don't last long at all. That's why I have to raise y hand when I start to feel it

  • @kns1988

My dentist said my doctor should have recommended extra Vitamin D due to my reaction. He's yet to do it. It may be a 2nd trimester thing he's waiting on.

  • Getting a root canal done with anesthetic even hurts...I couldn't imagine without. I'm sorry. I was planning to have all my wisdom teeth pulled this winter... Guess I'm gonna have to delay again. They have to put me under because they are either in my sinus cavity or hitting a nerve (yay) :-SS

  • I just had a root canal and had numbing shots, didn't feel a thing at all and the relief was instant! just mild discomfort straight after.

Just make sure your dentist covers you with a lead apron when you get your x-rays

Awesome! Not that you had that done but that it wasn't too bad. What about the pain after like the next day? I can't remember if it's bad or not. Anything has to be better than this though

  • I had two done with just numbing shots and it didn't hurt at all during the procedure and the pain was gone instantly. No pain afterwards either! It was great. I hope you have a similar experience.

  • Update! I'm all done. It was a hard one to numb so I did come out of the chair twice. As soon as he gave me the shot though the pain stopped. I'm still numb and a little itchy (?), but all in all it went fine. Now I just look like this:
