What can help thin the cervix?

I have been on bed rest to keep baby in because my body was changing and we'll now since I am off bed rest there is no changing. I am 37 weeks, no thinning or dilating. What can I do to help thin out and slowly change my cervix, doctors think I will go over or have to be induced since I went over with my daughter. I asked if they could help me induce when I get to 39 weeks the said I have to be at least 2 cm dilated before they can help. I stayed at a 2 with my daughter for weeks. I am making hubby bring down the treadmill today so I can start walking, what else can I do. I have been having contractions for a little over a week off and on but I guess it's not helping. I know baby will come when ready but I would like to have a little nudge.

  • Sometimes you won't dilate till labor starts ! You could be completely closed and dilate to 10 in a matter of a few hours, or you could be 3-4 cms for weeks and still have trouble reaching 10. I wouldn't worry about it, but your dr would be the best person to recommend something to you !
  • SEX! "Semen contains natural prostaglandins which help to ripen, or soften, the cervix and cause it to open. When the semen is deposited and it rests against the cervix, it can help it to dilate. It is a good idea to just lie down after sex and allow the prostaglandins to remain against the cervix for as long as possible."
  • Ask your doctor about evening primrose oil. It comes in 500 mg capsules; my midwives said I could take it twice a day and then poke a hole in one, and stick it up near the cervix before I go to bed at night
  • Haha my Dr told me today to have sex every night from here on out, drink 3 cups of raspberry tea a day and take one capsule of evening primrose in the morning and then at night poke holes in two and stick them in my vagina (use a pad). She's pregnant with her 5 th baby and has done this every time and it gets things ready to go. My husband was very happy with this advice.

I have read evening primrose oil can be linked to hemorrhaging during labor.
  • I use evening primrose oil,2 orally in the morning and two "up there" at night, drink raspberry leaf tea and also take 5w capsules,I'm in NZ though not sure if 5Wis available around the world but I HIGHLY recommend it.
  • Been having sex, and not helping. I did start walking I brought down the treadmill and started walking today and did some lunges and squats, I take 2000mg of the evening primrose oil, I hope it's not like to a hemorrhage during labor because I had a pph with my daughter.
  • Tooti Fruiti time will always do it!!! :x
  • Squats and sex. If you can do squats while you have sex... Might be a double whammy. Lol
  • I'm eating dates, 6 per day, and have been for a few weeks. Drinking 4 cups of red raspberry leaf tea, but this takes weeks to build up in your system, you have to drink it gradually. My cervix started to thin out a few weeks ago but it's been slow to dilate. My OBGYN is happy that my cervix has moved anterior and is starting to dilate now. But like PP states, you can go from 0, and high to 10 cm and anterior all during labor.
