Hope for being able to work out again?

i have been sick so far doing my first trimester that I have not been able to workout. I am taking do legit for nausea but does not always help. I feel like I have no energy to workout and was used to working out 3-4 days a week. Does anyone know if this will let up soon? I am a little over 10 weeks along.

Re: Hope for being able to work out again?

  • Diclegis... I guess there were some Auto corrections in there. Sorry.

  • I am a little over 11 weeks, so just ahead of you. I have been able to exercise off and on, but nowhere near what I usually do.

Finally feeling better these past few days!
  • Yeah... probably in second tri if not sooner, although you probably won't be quite up to your exercise routine before getting pregnant. I am still running, but have gone from 20+ miles a week to 6-12 miles a week, and I am already way slower.

  • I'm starting to feel a bit better entering the 9th week this week. I do find that if I start exercising, I feel better. Not sure if this is the norm, but thought I would mention it. I debated skipping the gym last night due to feeling nauseous, but was thankful I didn't since I felt better once I got started. You know your body best! Maybe start with something simple like a walk or jog and see how that feels?

  • Oh man, do I hope so. I'm going into week 11 and I still feel terrible. I used to workout 5-6 days a week, but I've only been to the gym 3 times in the past 3 weeks. I feel like I'm already being a terrible mom by sitting around all the time, but until this fatigue and nausea let up I'm afraid it's all I have the energy to do. Hopefully, we can get back into it soon! Hang in there!
  • I'm hoping to get clearance from my doctor on Tuesday to begin exercising again.  For the first 2 months I just felt tired and sick but still managed to get some runs in here and there, then a few weeks ago I had a subchorionic bleed and she told me no more exercising until I see her again.  Keeping my fingers crossed, I miss running with my friends :(
  • I agree that I tend to feel better on days that I exercise... although it's been a few days!

  • I cant wait to get the energy back to exercise again! I went from 5-6 days a week, to now nothing. I have been trying to go for more walks which feels really good, I don't have the energy for much else.

  • I will second (or third) feeling better after exercise. But I also know it is hard to convince yourself that it will make you feel better.
  • I'm right there with you. Most days I feel too nauseous and fatigued and haven't been to the gym in a month. Hoping once the morning sickness lets up I'll get back into the routine. I think it's important to listen to your body and take it easy if you're feeling really sick. Hopefully the second trimester will give us lots more energy!
  • I'm in my 9th week and have gone from 5 days of running prior to pregnancy and during first month to 3 or less this second month. I have little energy and am nauseous in the morning. Headaches on and off too. I love finally being pregnant after 2 years TTC but it is difficult to watch my body change as I have struggled with weight my entire life. This must sound silly and I feel silly saying it. I'm hoping to get my energy back soon so I feel like getting off my lazy behind. I worry that if I'm tired now and don't do anything what will it be like when the baby comes. It's my first and I am nervous.
  • I am having the same issue. I used to work out 4 or 5 times a week and now between nausea and being exhaust I can't even think about the gym. My doctor does encourage a fit pregnancy, but also made sure that I understand not to push it. I'm almost 11 weeks and stared going for walks on the weekend and now a few after dinner during the week. I don't feel like I'm working out by any means but it has helped me feel better. I recommend staring slow try a 30 min walk in the neighborhood and go from there. I hope to be back at the gym in a few weeks (fingers crossed nausea dies down) That's what has worked for me so far. Good luck :)
  • I used to work out almost every day and I haven't done anything in over a month. Too tired and sick to even attempt a resonable work out.
I used to do a lot of hot yoga, I feel like part of the reason I feel so terrible is that I haven't been able to do it.
Really hoping things go back to normal soon, I'm 10 weeks now.
  • To give you ladies some hope, I also had been feeling pretty awful through week 11 and didn't do any exercise outside of walking.  I'm now 12 weeks and went swimming last week and back to zumba last night--both felt great! So, it does get better and you will get your energy back.

  • I used to work out 6 days a week and the last 2.5 months I haven't been to the gym once due to tiredness, headaches/dizziness, and nauceousness. It's been really hard on me physically and mentally/emotionally. I'm just over 12 weeks and starting to feel better (still tired but not as much), and at my check up this week the doctor said it was fine to get back into exercising... But she said to avoid any high intensity exercise or weight lifting over 25lbs. Most of my working out consisted of high intensity interval training and weight lifting... So I'm a little upset. Should I be sticking to cardio and other light weight training exercises? I have a friend who says she knows women who still go to Crossfit while pregnant so I should be fine with my normal routines. Anyone have similar doctor advice or input from previous pregnancies?
  • @kellilotter Here is a quick faq sheet from ACOG regarding exercise during pregnancy: https://www.acog.org/Patients/FAQs/Exercise-During-Pregnancy

And the official paper on it: https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/37/1/6.long

If you scroll down, the paper has the exercise prescription all laid out - type, duration, time, frequency, etc.

I used to work out about 6 times a week, but the exhaustion was killing me before week 8.  Now I'm doing my workouts in the morning before I get too tired, and that seems to help with my energy throughout the day (not to mention bloating).  Still working out about 4 times a week now, but I'm hoping I can pick up the frequency a bit more as the exhaustion starts to subside (hopefully) in the second trimester.  My doctor gave me the go ahead to continue with my regular workouts, but I've been reading about avoiding crunches in the second/third trimester.  Does anyone have any experience with this throughout their pregnancy?  This is my first. :) BabyFruit Ticker

  • It will get better. Just be kind to yourself about it and ease into it. I'm 11+6 today and I only just went for a long walk yesterday.

Most of the problem is in my head. I am anxious about going to the gym and getting sick even though I don't really get sick anymore (only if I eat rich, spicy or fried food). So I went walking around the neighborhood. It felt safer and less stressful. And my dog loved it.

My goal is to feel comfortable going to the gym again, but my rule of thumb is to listen to my body. If it is sending signals that the gym is not a good idea, I don't go.

Walking is a good compromise and builds my confidence toward my goal. It might help you build your confidence that your upchucking won't be a problem too.
  • Before, I was walking about 45 - 90/min 6 - 7x a week.  As soon as the nausea set in, I have done nothing.  Just getting warm makes me feel ill and light headed.

But, I am 10 weeks now and this weekend I went for 30 minute walk!  I wasn't fast and I still got pretty tired.  But!!!  I was able to get out and about!
  • I used to do hard work outs several times a week before getting pregnant--- haven't been in the gym in almost ten weeks due to nausea... Until today! It was very light, only ten minutes switching between a brisk walk and a calm one on the treadmill to keep the heart rate down, then some light reps with the arms and legs (keeping at 20 pounds to remain below the 50 pound limit-- most I'll end up working up to is MAYBE 40.) before cooling down with some yoga, all with some breathing aids (mainly dynamics) in between.
    It felt great!
