Diet controlled GD, getting induced 2nd thoughts

FTM..I have diet controlled GD and Im scheduled to go in to start the inducing process tmw. I'm having second thoughts. I will be 39 weeks 2 days tmw. Is this the right thing to do? I am worried for no reason? I guess just worry is it the safest? I'm going to call my doc tmw morning to discuss. Just wondering if there is anyone else out there in a similar situation?

Re: Diet controlled GD, getting induced 2nd thoughts

  • Of course it is natural to want to just leave it up to nature, but at 39 and 2, baby is definitely fully developed and with the slight increased risk of stillbirth or excessive growth (even in diet controlled), I think doctors prefer the induction than to deal with the possibility of a devastating loss, albeit slight. I work in the OB field, and specialize in losses, etc. Knowing that the baby will be completely healthy on the outside at 39 and change beats the slight odds.  If you didn't have any issues, that would be a different story and I am not for inductions generally, GDM has had tons of research and in these cases the peace of mind is worth it.

I am dealing with the same thing, but my baby is breech as well, so I am already scheduled for a section at 39 and 2.  While I would love for a natural process, it just doesn't always work out that way.  I am telling myself that every less day that I am diabetic (and with true GDM, it literally does go away right with the placenta) it is healthier for me in the long run and I am less likely to develop Type two down the road.

You should still explain your concerns to your doc, and hopefully they can also help ease your concerns, but the baby is coming sooner or later so maybe there is just some underlying anxiety about having the baby in general tucked in there, and not as much about the induction.  Either way, you will get through it and the reward is the healthy baby :)

  • I had GD (diet controlled with this pregnancy. My due date was Oct. 1, so I was induced on September 24th at 39 weeks. They were worried about my placenta aging to much and I had a lot of extra amniotic fluid from the GD as well. My baby girl arrived safely on the 25. Being induced wasn't my first choice but in the end it was safest for our girl. She is healthy and it's hard to believe she is a little over a week old already. She is doing wonderful! Hope this helps:) I was worried too and talked with my dr as well. He was very patient and explained things for me and made sure I was comfortable with everything.
  • I also have diet controlled GD and my Doctor is letting me do what is comfortable for me. She will let me go to 42 weeks if I want to. She is a little worried about a big baby. When I went for my growth ultrasound at 38 weeks (I am 40+3) she was measuring at 8lbs5oz. When I went to my 40 week appointment Dr thought she was measuring at around 8lbs so hopefully that means the ultrasound was off. Baby has passed every test with flying colors which is why she isn't worried. I have been having fluctuating BP readings but no other issues so she hasn't pushed that as well. I originally wanted baby to come on her own and was willing to go to 42 weeks but I think at my appointment tomorrow I will ask to be induced after 41 weeks. Hopefully she will come on her own but I have made peace with my decision ultimately. Hopefully that helps!
  • Thank you everyone. This really does help, sometimes it's nice to know your not alone. Tmw is the big day!! Eck! Ready to do this!
  • I find it so interesting how different our experineces are with GD. I have been diet controlled and my doctor won't even entertain the idea of an induction even though I wish it was at least on the table for discussion. My baby was measuring 7lb4oz at 36+1 and still he said since baby scored an 8 out of 8, there are no other issues, he will let me go until the baby is ready even  if that is 42 weeks. Talk to your doctor. Do what feels right. But honestly, I don't know that any FTM goes into labor completely at ease whether its an induced labor or spontaneous one. Best of luck!
