Active labor vs non active labor vs hard labor

This is a really dumb question coming from a soon to be third time mom but I've never understood the difference between active, non active labor and hard labor. My labors were 7.5 hours and 3.5 hours respectively from first contraction to birth and during the entire time I had the stop, hold on, breathe through them contractions.
Can someone please explain the difference to me. I always feel dumb when I'm asked how long of my labors was hard labor or active.

Re: Active labor vs non active labor vs hard labor

  • I just labored for 32 hours last Wednesday, and was told slow labor is in the beginning before 4 centimeters, active phase once water breaks things speed up and move along quicker stronger, then delivery once you're at 10cms, Although most of my contractions were- stop talking to me, let me breathe contractions

  • Thank you. With both I was dilated to 4 prior to labor starting so I guess I just skipped that part. I feel bad when people (good friends typically) ask about it and I have no idea. I feel like an idiot lol. Now I'm hearing "when your in transition" and I have no clue what that means lol.
  • In transition is when you're moving into 10 cm. I threw up a bunch (mostly dry heaving since nothing was in my stomach) when I was in transition.

Oh. I didn't know there was a different feeling for that. Thank you guys!!!
  • I believe early labor is from 0-4cm, with shorter contractions that can be up to 20 minutes apart. Active labor is from 4-7cm, with contractions lasting anywhere from 45-60 seconds and being 5 to 7 minutes apart. Then transitional labor is from 7-10cm, contractions can last from 60-120 seconds and can be 1 to 3 minutes apart. Each of the three stages gets more intense and shorter. Obviously every woman labors differently and not every labor will follow this timeline exactly!
  • With my first I really didn't feel any different for transition. I'm hoping that will be true this time too, I've heard it's no fun!!
  • @midge519 did you have epidurals? Maybe you didn't feel the transition period.

With my first I did but I had a hot spot right on my vagina so the pain never went away and within 1.5 hour of getting it I was telling the nurse I had to poop (learned then that was the feeling of needing to push). With my second I went too fast for anything and my contractions started every two minutes lasting 30-45 seconds and I was a full 7 by the time I arrived at the hospital (2.5 hours later with stopping at my doctors first) Within 55 minutes my water broke on its own and she was born.
