VBAC - anyone try it?

I have to decide if I want to try VBAC and I am so torn... My last pregnancy was a twin pregnancy, I went in at 36 weeks for my ultrasound and they decided it was time to deliver. I wasn't really ready for it and it was 2 days before Christmas.
I like the idea of picking the date and scheduling the birth - having arrangements for family to be with our boys.
I don't like the pain mess and anesthesia. (I would do an epidural)
I am tempted to let my body do what a woman's body is made to do but I am also nervous. And I don't want an emergency c-section or a failed VBAC.
Any advice on how to decide
Success and horror stories welcome!
TIA

  • I'm in the same boat! I really want to try for VBAC. Not a fan of the recovery time from a c section. Unless I can persuade my doc into a tummy tuck. Lol

I'm also trying to decide. Right now I'm leaning more towards rcs because I have adhesions and a heart shaped uterus, which both lower my likelihood of success with a vbac. I would absolutely love an unmedicated birth, but prefer a scheduled c section to a possible emergency c section. Small added bonus is that my doctor has offered to make the incision so that I can get rid of the small roll of extra skin and scar tissue I was left with last time. Hearing stories of both would be very helpful. @twinmom3221 My mother did a vbac with my little brother after having my twin sister and me. They actually let her try it even with a vertical incision; thankfully it was successful! Eta-- she was induced at 42 weeks with her vbac and managed it with a bit of IV painkillers to take off the edge of the pitocin contractions.
  • I am planning to try for a vbac. However, I had 2 vaginal births prior to my csection (3rd baby was transverse), so I feel like as long as baby is in the right position my body should know just what to do. I know you don't have that experience on your side, so a 1st labor can be tough.
I will say, having experienced both c and vag birth, that the recovery time was much, much shorter and easier after a vaginal birth than c section. Just something to consider, especially since you will have older children to care for as well as a newborn.
  • I had a c/s for breech with my first and would like to try for a vbac this time around. I don't even know if my current doc is willing. I agree that having the scheduled c/s is great, but of course I went into labor the day before!

I was in active labor for 30+ hours and never got past 2cm even though my contractions were back to back and really strong. Growth scan the day before estimated she was 9#10oz give or take a pound, so ob was worried about sholder dystocia. I would love to try for a VBAC but I'm not sure I trust that my body would work for me and the type A side of me would love the idea of scheduling delivery. All that to say I'm still on the fence.

Also, if you want to read more about this topic specifically there is a VBAC board under Pregnancy*!

  • Keep in mind to check with your hospital/doctor. Some won't do a VBAC. I hope you all get to have the experience you want!

The same thing happened to me with my son!
  • I had a C-section with my twins and then had a successful VBAC with my 4th baby.  I totally understand that it is a hard decision and I loved my C-section (no labor, planned date, etc), but I talked to my doctor and she was very supportive of a VBAC since vaginal is better so I tried it and I succeeded!  I would say talk to your doctor and see what he/she thinks.

  • My daughter was 10lbs 1oz 22in long. I apparently grow giants and there is no way imma try to push 10+lber out of my 5ft 2in body. Is it true what they say that second babies are usually bigger then the first?! [-O<

  • I had an unplanned c/s with DS. He had flipped the day before my scheduled induction at 41 weeks. I would like to try VBAC but I'm unsure. Definitely something I'll be talking to my doctor about.
My mom had a c/s with both me and my middle sister..10 years later she attempted VBAC with my youngest sister. She was in labor for 24+ hours, made no progress and had an er c/s. She lost a lot of blood and had multiple blood transfusions. My mom will most likely encourage a rcs.

  • My son was Frank breech so I had a scheduled C-section. I'm going to try for a VBAC this time

  • I was planning on trying VBAC *if* I went into labor on my own. I didn't, so had a RCS. This is baby #3, and I won't consider VBAC anymore.
3 years ago my friend lost her daughter attempting to VBAC. It was horrific.
  • It is my goal to try for a VBAC, I will discuss it with my OB when i get further along.

  • So apparently the closest hospital that will do them is an hour away from me.  Is it crazy to consider going with a midwife practice who attends VBACs, and having a home birth in a rented house next to the hospital I love?

  • I'm definitely going for a RPS.  My labor was really hard and didn't end well (healthy baby but everything else... oof).  Mentally I can't go through that again.

But, I wanted to offer luck and praise for those of you who will try for a VBAC.  You are braver women than I!

  • I had a successful medication-free VBAC with my second, and it was one of the best things I ever did. I felt amazing afterwards. It's always important to recognize that things can veer away from plan, and one of the things that helped me feel calm and in control was that I had some contingency plans in place in case a RCS became necessary. It kind of helped me mentally move from 'if CS -> everything is RUINED!' to 'okay, now we use plan B.' I was very happy not to have to use that plan, however.
