First ultrasound and OB workup! Advice?

I'm 17 and a first time mom. I am 9 weeks pregnant. I have my first OB workup on Tuesday (I will be 9 weeks 4 days then.) They are doing my ultrasound first thing in the morning and I just wandered what I should prepare for? I am high risk because of my age, I weigh 315 pounds, and I have thyroid problems. I still haven't gotten any paperwork from the office so I don't know whether it's a vaginal ultrasound or abdominal. And was looking for advice on how the 1st OB workup usually goes? Thank you!

Re: First ultrasound and OB workup! Advice?

  • it can be different for anyone depending on their own medical problems most doctors wont see you until 9-12 weeks
so seems like youre doctor is doing just that

they would have told you if it was transvaginal , i assume, did they tell you to come with a full bladder or?

you will most likely have to pee in a cup if you havent already to confirm pregnancy, do blood work to test you for various things like red/white cell blood counts, type of blood you have etc , and they may do a pelvic exam with pap smear to make sure you do not have any infections, stds and general health of your cervix etc.

at 9 weeks im going to imagine they will do an abdominal ultrasound, however that being said you may be wrong/off on how many weeks you are, and the doctor may not see anything on the U/S making them have to do a transvaginal

  • Welcome. There are weekly appointment threads you can check out. This week's is on the first page.
  • If you are terrified of needles, be ready to get poked. Don't end up hyperventilating in the corner while nurses run around yelling "Juice! We need juice NOW!" No, that didn't happen to me, I swear......

Have fun, bring a list of questions, take detailed notes. Be prepared to cry during your first ultrasound, I sure did!
  • @TheThornBird did you just like get bloodwork or were they chasing you with needles :p
  • They haven't told me anything but to be there 15 minutes early. They were supposed to be sending me a bunch of paperwork and instructions in the mail. I called yesterday and they had the wrong address so I'm worried it won't get here before my appointment. So I'm clueless as to what is going to go on lol

so call the day before if the mail does not reach you in time, and let them know the mail did not get to you, so you dont know the instructions.pretty much every doctor appointment pregnant or not is a shot in the dark until youre there,
  • Okay thank you!
  • @asunna They claim they were just trying to draw blood, but I will swear on my deathbed they were chasing after me with needles the size of my hand ;)

At least I don't run around trashing the room anymore, like I did when I was a kid!

Haha. My mom got me a script for Valium bc of my fear of needles. So I took 5, then the nurse made the mistake of leaving the room. I smashed their window and jumped out from the 2nd floor. And don't send a man nurse, it's too easy to kick them in the nuts. Oh but I'm a grownup now so I have to sit down and take it
