High-Risk Pregnancy

Low Platelets at 14 weeks?

Hey there, so I've been doing some research but can't seem to find anyone with a similar experience. I'm getting a bit worried and the doctors seem to be brushing it off like it's nothing, so I'm here for a bit of support and hopefully someone with a similar situation or story.

Last week the doctor called and asked me to redo my blood tests as my platelets showed low at my 8 week appointment at 132. I went back in two days ago and had then retested at 14 weeks and 4 days, now the platelets have dropped to 88! The doctor plans to monitor me weekly, but I'm really concerned what if they continue to drop? We're still pretty early in the pregnancy and it just seems that was a drastic decrease in just a few weeks.

Has anyone had the same experience? Did your platelets increase again? What happened? Someone on another board says this makes me high risk? Of what? The research doesn't seem terribly informative and sounds like it is "nothing to worry" about.

  • I would try to get a second opinion. Have they said anything about your liver enzymes? I delivered at 34+4 due to dropping platelets and high liver enzymes. It was HELLP syndrome. It's pretty rare and even rarer before the 3rd tri. But it is really serious, so I wouldn't let this go.

  • I have to return this Friday for another blood test. I'm going to ask for a liver function test while I'm there, but they've not offered one yet. Unfortunately, I'm currently living in the UK with my husband who is stationed here, so I'm not entirely sure how to get a second opinion with the NHS. Something I will look into if this next text doesn't come back more positively.

Between now and then, my plan is to eat foods that are rumoured to increase platelet count (spinach, beef, citrus, cashews) and see whether or not that helps. That's of my own accord, doctor said there was nothing I could do.
