Blood tests?

Hi ladies! This is my first pregnancy and am at 5 weeks today (at my best guess). I see everyone here posting about their blood being drawn over and over again to check hcg levels. I'm just a little confused because I am seeing my OB for the first time next Friday at 6 weeks. They do not have me scheduled for a blood test even then. Are you ladies asking for these tests from your doctor or are they automatically scheduling them for you?

Re: Blood tests?

  • Most of us who have had blood draws (betas) have a history of losses, are seeing an RE or have another issue making is high risk. It is totally normal for a woman who is pregnant for the first time, or who has no history of loss to NOT have a blood draw.

  • I had my betas done because I had to go through IVF. Be lucky you don't have to go through all that stress :-)
  • No bloodwork and my first appointment isn't until 10 weeks. Doc said that is standard for a first time, non high risk pregnancy. Wish we could go sooner but I also like the idea that by then we should have a very strong heartbeat if all is progressing well.

  • My first appointment is at 10 weeks (maybe a little less I think i Od late but they only go by lmp) so even at 9 weeks we should have a great heartbeat!!!

  • I only got blood drawn with DS because I asked for a pregnancy test. Otherwise I wouldn't have. They didn't tell me my HCG level then, but that "it's really early and a lot can happen (I was 3 weeks and a few days).. You will probably get a whole bunch of labs at your 6 weeks appt.

  • My first appointment is between 8-9 weeks. And they just do a blood draw to confirm pregnancy. And you talk to a nurse. We don't even see an OB until 12 weeks along. That's when they check for heart beat too. And the NT Scan if you chose.

So no. It is a normal practice for a low risk (no previous loss or infertility concerns) pregnancies.

  • I only got blood because I was seeing a specialist. They won't be testing my HCG again unless there is concern/reason too. My thyroid however is now Going to constantly be tested. Eep!
  • With DS they called me after my initial appointment and had me go do a blood test around 6ish weeks because the heartbeat didn't show up at the dating ultrasound (they did it too early). Initially they weren't going to do a test but they wanted to make sure my levels were in the appropriate range so I didn't have to wait another week when they did another ultrasound. They also did a blood test after my 12 week appointment to test my immunity to all the diseases you don't want when you're pregnant.

So for a boring ol' pregnancy it's common to not have hcg levels tests.
