Tummy feeling tight when walking

Hi ladies,

I tried searching this and found some threads on BH but, I'm not convinced that's what this is. I'm a FTM and I'll admit I know nothing so, hoping someone can shed some light.

I've noticed recently that when I do any kind of walking for longer than a few minutes - a walk in the mall, walking the dog or a 5km walk for charity I did tonight - my belly gets really tight and I feel like I have a cramp. Not a period cramp, more like an I-didn't-wait-long-enough-after-I-ate-to-start-exercising cramp.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any idea what it could be?

Thanks all!

Re: Tummy feeling tight when walking

  • Is it painful or just a pressure feeling? Do they go away when you sit down? To me, this sounds like Braxton hicks. I get them when I'm walking and would describe it as my uterus becoming tight/hard.

What makes you think they aren't BH?

  • My BH usually have a bit of a dull cramp feeling to them especially if I'm on my feet for a while and/or my bladder is full too. They don't feel the same walking as they do sitting down for sure.
  • It does sound like BH. I got it with my first around 6 months and I am getting them again. As long as it is not painful and goes away with sitting. But, anything you feel uncomfortable with let your OB know. Remember, it's their job.
  • Thanks ladies. I only ever get them when walking for longer periods of time so that's why I thought maybe it was something different. It's not painful just uncomfortable and does go away almost immediately when I sit down. Like I said...first time mum with no idea what to expect from day to day. Knowing exercise is important during pregnancy I just got worried that maybe I was doing something I shouldn't be, hence the discomfort.

  • I'm also a FTM and I have brought it up at each prenatal appt so far as mine started at 15 weeks. That's the only reason I'm calm about them now :) You can still go walking just take a rest if it becomes too uncomfortable and drink LOADS of water bc it really does help. I've switched to yoga for exercise primarily and it doesn't aggravate the BH as much. And I'm a huge advocate for mentioning this stuff to your doctor. If for no other reason than its noted.
  • I'm a STM and have been diagnosed with irritable uterus with both my first and this one. It sounds like a mixture of Braxton hicks and you uterus getting irritated by the walking. If it's not painful and goes away when sitting then I wouldn't worry. But def bring it up to your dr. And as Pp said drink tons of water. 8-10 oz an hour is what they tell me.
  • I walked 2 miles yesterday and felt the same feeling you described. I've had BH while sitting and it felt quite different but maybe, like mentioned in PP, it just feels different while walking. It wasn't painful at all, so it didn't worry me. Happy Walking! :)

  • This! If I walk for too long or am just on my feet or not relaxed I start getting BH. The only way for me to get them to stop is to sit down and relax and drink lots of water with my feet elevated. They generally become shorter and less uncomfortable the longer I am off my feet. It freaked me out at first but as long as they aren't painful and I don't have any excess discharge with them I've been told not to worry too much.
  • Sounds like Braxton hicks to me I'm a FTM and 24 weeks with twin girls. I have this if walking too much, on feet too much n things like that. I had no clue what it was till last night in all honesty
  • I have this all the time. I had an irritable uterus with my first and with twins it actually started later. But, the tightness happens more when I stand up this time. My doctor said to take it easy, but moving is really the best thing. If I don't move every 20 minutes, they are much worse. Try to find a balance that works.

p.s. my constipation causes the same thing. Gatorade helps for it as well.
  • Yep my 4th and I have this. I think I got it with the others too but I tend to block out what I went through for some reason so I can't really remember what stage it started! But I have it now for sure - embarrassing as only waddling whilst walking seems to ease it & then people ask and exist Ms to tell them I'm 8 months pregnant not 5! But I am Huge (overweight by quite a bit but also massive big pregnancy bump) not impressed :( but I guess it's all part of the fun!
  • Mine just started yesterday after cleaning the kitchen and all day today my belly has been really tight when I walk, even just a short distance. It also happens if I stand for more than 5 minutes. It's higher up near my belly button that gets the brunt of it. I'm guessing it just Braxton hicks since I'm s ftm as well. Since I'm not bleeding and it gets mostly better when I sit, I'm not too worried.
