Thrush or Mastitis?

this might be a dumb question but how do you know the difference between the two?
because the treatment is totally different.
I have pain in only my left breast. It just started today. Hurts more during and right after feeding
I figure it's best to treat it ASAP but how do you know which one it is. I called the dr. Waiting for a call back.

    Mastitis my boob was red and hot to touch. I had a fever too.

    Also, the initial latch and let down felt like molten hot magma flowing out of my nipples but subsided with a little bit of time. I think thrush, the babies tongue and gums will be white. Check her out!

    This is what's happening exactly. But No fever.
    No white gums or cheeks either. She has standard "milk tounge" but that goes away when wiped. She acts like she isn't getting enough milk and wants to nurse every hour perhaps to just torture me.

    The doctor says mastitis gets worse rapidly so be careful. A round of antibiotics and it's over....6 hours later pain free. Hope your tits feel terrific again soon, momma.

    There's white spots in the back of the mouth for the babies. I had thrush and for me it was just my nipples that hurt really bad when feeding with some sharp shooting pains once in awhile. Then they would burn for bout an hour after feeding. Hope this helps.

    I had atrocious pain like pins and needles in my breasts. My Dr said it is probably my letdown and I needed to nurse or pump more. I pumped and it was better. Good luck!

    They also said I would be itchy and there would be discharge if it were thrush or mastitis.

    When I had mastitis, my breast was red. I initially felt like the flu was coming on but the next morning that was gone and my breast was just red and sore. I nursed every two hours and offered that breast first and then pumped after to make sure it was emptied. I never needed antibiotics. If it doesn't get better within 24 hours, you may want to go to the doctor because you may need antibiotics. Also, heat before nursing and ice between nursing helps.

    Thrush gave me a deep, bruised feeling in one breast that rooted its way into my chest. Nipple pain came three days later, like ground glass. Baby never had white spots on her mouth or gums, but her white tongue wouldn't wipe clean. Nipples turned a different color. No fever. BFing made me cry. Pumping hurt worse.

    This may be a dumb question, but do you go to your OB for this? I've been having pain too and it seems like more than just normal BF pain. I have a needle feeling in my left breast and it's also been red and hot. But it comes and goes for me. I saw a LC thinking it was a bad latch, but she wasn't much help.

    I'm wondering the same thing... Which doctor are you going to? I'm wondering if I have thrush...

    I think you can see either. I'm going to my general MD because it's a family practice and she sees my baby also. And simply because I like her more. My OB can never remember me and the diagnosis always seems rushed. I still haven't figured out what's wrong. Now it's just the nipple that hurts. When I feed it feels like someone cutting off my nipple with a hot knife.

    @corndogrobot -- sounds like thrush.  You can start putting Lotramin on your nipples between feeds until you get an Rx from your doctor and one from your pediatrician to clear it up.  Also start taking an antibiotic.   Your doc will tell you to continue the treatment for 2-3 weeks.  Listen to his/her advice; I didn't, and mine just came back!  Ouch.
