Transitioning to formula for medical reason... Feeling sad

Just need to get it out...I'm feeling so sad and stressed. My 3 month old DD has reflux and dairy/soy protein intolerance. I've cut those things from my diet but she still is uncomfortable some days, arches her back, cries, refuses to feed. She is on Zantac and it's still a roller coaster...some days good, some terrible. The pediatric gastro dr wants me to pump and give her Nutramigen formula for 2 days to see if she does better. He said some babies are just sensitive to tons of things in mom's diet. I am feeling heartbroken. I refuse to put her through misery so if she does better on the formula I will make the switch. The problem is she likes the breast milk better so it's hard to get her to eat the formula. Any tips?? I can't help but crying, I miss breastfeeding her already and it hasn't been even 24 hrs.

I'm hoping everything works out so you can breastfeed your little one again! Cheer up and enjoy your beautiful blessing!! We're Praying for a miracle!!! ;)

  • No tips here (sorry). But good luck. I know what you're going through-just hang tight and know you're doing what's best for her.

  • Are you giving her your breastmilk in a bottle or are you breastfeeding? Could it be the bottle she doesn't like with the formula? If so, you could switch to pumping and giving her breastmilk in a bottle and see if that helps? Otherwise you'd like to think that she'll take the formula once she gets hungry enough but she could be quite fussy before that happens. Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies! She does take breastmik in the bottle fine when she is not uncomfortable but doc is thinking many things in the breastmilk are bothering her and the formula would be easier for her to handle.
  • Hugs, mama. It can be so hard. My son was on Alimentum from 6 months until a year. *I* am the one who is free of dairy and soy due to allergies, and so when we transitioned him to formula he couldn't handle either (because he hadn't been exposed to them) and so we went dairy and soy-free for his first year.

I hope you don't mind if I ask some questions since I've BTDT both with allergies AND with reflux.

First, what dosage of Zantac is your LO on? Has your pediatrician talked about any other reflux meds? Some babies do so much better with Prevacid. Zantac and Prevacid are two different medications that work differently.

Secondly, did you try eliminating all dairy and soy from your diet? It takes 2 weeks for both to get out of YOUR system and then another 2 weeks to totally get out of HER system. While you can see improvement in the initial days, it does take a while to rid your systems of it. Also, dairy and soy are hidden in so many foods.

I think wanting to breastfeed her is important for you, then you should see what measures you could take to continue to do so. Would your pediatrician refer you to a ped GI doctor to see what can be done for your LOs reflux? Maybe switching to formula isn't the answer...

  • I've been free of dairy/soy for 2 months now. I read the labels really carefully as I went through this with my son also. He used to have blood/mucus in his stool. He didn't refuse feeds though. I am seeing a pediatric GI, he is the one who prescribed Zantac. He said we can try Nexium but he wanted me to try this first. My son took alimentum from 7 months on and did well. I just want to do what is best for her but it's so hard to figure out what that is.
  • Try the DR Sears food elimination diet!, helped my LO with reflux/colic tremendously as did taking probiotics while nursing! Good luck
  • Try an infant probiotic. It may help. Although my girl doesnt have bad reflux she still would get really upset while feeding or right after. I told my doc about her stools being a funky color and her fussiness at the breast and he suggested a probiotic. I was takin a lot of medication at the beginning and it messed wth her little gut. I got my "mother bliss" drops at target. It can't hurt and maybe it'll help your baby at least nurse a little.
  • She is on a probiotic, but I truly appreciate all the input.
