Crib Safety - Falling in the crib

Last night my little guy scared me half to death.  He has started pulling himself up to his knees and his feet in his crib.  The problem is he often lets go with one hand to look around.  Last night when he turned back to put his hand back on the bars he missed and ended up falling (face planting) into the wooden bars.  I was watching him on the monitor when it happened and there was a loud thump and he started screaming.  We ran upstairs and he stopped crying pretty quickly once we picked him up.  Luckily he doesn't have any noticeable bumps or bruises. My husband said he did the same thing when he entered the room this morning. Has anyone experienced this? What was your solution? Everything I've read says not to put bumpers on the cribs especially once they beginning pulling themselves up.  My husband seems to think its just part of the growing pains of attempting and failing when babies are learning balance, but I'd sleep better if I knew there wasn't a risk of him face planting into wooden railings in the middle of the night. Any advice?

  • I agree with your husband.

  • Perhaps I'm being overprotective. I apologize for wasting a post if that's the obvious answer. I suppose babies have been doing this ever since there have been cribs to hold them.  Although it seemed harsh to let it continue, it may be the only solution short of supervising him every second (Clearly not an option).
  • My little man hasn't started to prop himself up yet but I am not looking forward to the inevitable falls. While I do agree that some falls are inevitable and part of the learning process, I also think it is inevitable for us to be concerned with each and every fall and to do whatever we can to protect our loved ones! If you're really concerned you may want to seek your pediatrician's advice but given that you were able to soothe your LO pretty quickly, I think you're probably fine with your crib as is. :)
  • No advice since I'm not there yet but you didn't waste a post. It's a valid concern! And I'd like to think there's no such thing as a dumb question here.
  • My son did that for a couple of weeks ( face planting ) he kept on trying to hard to stand up he had his fair share of falls ...I put one of his soft thin blankets over the rail of the crib and it help to soften then hit( of course at 6 months he knows how to move blankets off his face if it fell on him so no worries there ) ..he has gotten so much better with balance that he now knows how to fall back on his butt and avoids the hits so no blanket is needed on the rail anymore ! He will be pass that stage quick don't worry and good luck !
  • He will figure it out :)
My oldest basically had a horn on the middle of his forehead when learning how to walk because he would fall every other step. You do feel awful for them, and want to protect them, but like PP said its a stage that they hopefully figure out and pass through quickly!
