Natural Inducers

It is much too early for our babies to make an appearance; however, once you are term and have doctors approval of course, do you plan on trying to self-induce using natural methods? Which one(s)? I did not try with DD1 but I've been reading about the various theories that have been passed around, some proven, to apparently work. I find it rather interesting and would like to hear opinions, stories, etc about the entire idea. Just to get our brains thinking and possibly pondering ideas for our miserable 40+ week selves. :)

  • I doubt I will bother with any self induction.  I can't see eating a whole pineapple as being a "natural" method (or any of the other ones)  Maybe the sex thing, that seems like the most natural, but even then I don't think I'll do it with the purpose of trying to go into labour.

The whole pineapple idea sounds a bit made up to me. Plus, ew.
  • Sorry I'm with PPs babies come when they feel like it. My water broke at 40+3 and labor didn't start, I still had to be induced they gave me 4 hours and not a darn thing was happening on its own.
  • I'm a FTM so no personal but I had a friend who when she was full term drank some, I think raspberry leaf, tea and she said that worked for her. I dunno.
Scientifically, I could understand things like sex or nipple stimulation working seeing as how they release oxytocin. Pitocin is essentially pumped up mock oxytocin from what I understand.
Not sure, but it makes sense to me.

The whole pineapple thing kinda makes me mad. I can easily eat a whole pineapple. I mean I'm sure you would have to eat more than one maybe? Idk. But I love that stuff.

I would estimate that I could eat approximately 2-3 pineapples. It's one of my favorite things on earth. If you give me a tub of cool whip to dip it in, I'll marry you forever and ever.
Since we are labor buddies, we can both sit down one evening once we are past 40 weeks and just eat our weight in pineapple. See who goes into labor first.
I don't think I'm yalls labor buddy but I'm down for the pineapple fun

Pretty sure this theory involves eating the whole core as well, since that's where most of the bromine(sp?) is.
  • Haha pineapple lovers I read you would need to eat at least 7 pineapples and cores in order for this to actually have any effect! And u would most likely just end up with a belly ache and maybe the runs?? Haha I love pineapple but I doubt I could ever eat 7!!!!
  • Pineapple makes my mouth feel like it's burning. I love the stuff but it doesn't love me.

Aparently my comment wants to post twice sorry!
  • Oh man now I want pineapple
  • TB 40+ pineapple labor party.
I've read that kiwis, pineapple, mangos and such have enzymes that supposedly can give you contractions. And that pineapple has been accredited in a few studies to soften and "ripen" the cervix. Whether it works, dunno but I do like me some pineapple. Anyway you can get it too, it seems; juiced, smoothies, fresh, canned, and I think dried as well. And dried fruits help with anemia.

This sounds like a plan to me. I do eat the core sometimes too, just because it's easier than cutting around it.

And canker sores. Lots of canker sores.
  • Of course babies will come when they are good & ready but I will totally try some of the home remedies at 40+ weeks. As long as they aren't harmful, why not? It will help pass the time & it would be kind of fun! :) I probably won't eat a whole pineapple .. Maybe a few pineapple smoothies though!
  • ^^ That's the way I looked at it too.  It was fun once I got past 39 weeks to go out for a really spicy meal or get a pedicure and think "maybe today!"  Never took anything too seriously.  The last thing I ate before I went into labor was a huge bbq chicken sandwich from Whole Foods (the one near us in TX had an in-store smoker, it always smelled amazing).  Maybe bbq sauce is my inducer!
  • If I go more than a few days past 40 weeks, I'll probably try some of the natural induction methods, I'd really like to avoid having to be medically induced (but I'll accept it if I must). Not going to worry too much about it until then. That said, I do love pineapple...

To any one considering pineapple or curry or other spicy food... Can we just take a moment to consider- do you really want to risk having super-acidic-or-spicy-food-induced-poos when you're in labour?!?
Yes! Or risk having it come back up while in labour? Just as bad...

  • I'll jump on the pineapple bandwagon! I love it and would eat a whole one anyday.
  • My sister was doing deep squats and leaning up against the wall and she went into labor 4 hours later. In the middle of the night, of course. She was glad to have the baby two days before her husband had to go back to work in another state.
  • Every time I read the word pineapple my heartburn gets worse. Can I just put the thing in my vagina? I'd need two bottles of tums to get through a pineapple right now haha

    Don't try it whole!

    Don't try it whole!
Or at least peel it first! And remove the leaves.
  • I don't plan to do anything to encourage baby to come early, I'm taking three online classes right now and trying to finish all my papers/assignments before baby comes!

However, it may be just fluke, but after 5 years of TTC, hubby and I tried the pineapple trick and conceived that month.  Bromelain in the pineapple is supposed to thin CM, yadda yadda.  I'll be avoiding it for that reason, just in case!
