Do you have a budget for your nursery?

If so, what is it? I know everyone's income is different but I'm curious what everyone else is doing. I have champagne taste without the champagne budget because I want to have plenty saved and then some for mat leave. Anyway I'm getting tempted to start on the nursery and furniture alone is so expensive. We are team green so I want to do gray furniture because that will work either way. What is your budget for your nursery?

Re: Do you have a budget for your nursery?

  • My budget is buy as little as possible. Lol. I have 2 other children so, whatever I can pass down or save money on we will use. Only thing I'm buying is a crib. We tend to go convertible on those which are a bit more costly, but that is what they will use until forever. Lol. With our first, we spent no more than $500. We bought the crib new but the bedding set was from a consignment store, the glider we redid the one my mom had and never used. That's about it. We do with what we got.

  • My budget is expanding as I realize how much "quality" baby furniture can cost. I want stuff that I can use with another kid, so we may spend $600 or $700 on furniture. Maybe even more depending on the glider I like. Ugh, not excited about it.

We bought the same crib as we did for our daughter, so we knew that cost going in. I'm not willing to fork over $200+ for a dresser when the ones I see are particle board. I will probably browse Facebook resale sites and/or stop at a furniture resale store I know of to see what prices they have. Hardest part is transport though because we don't have a truck/SUV for delivery. All the decorations will be used from items I have in the house already with the exception of the mobile, I will be looking for mini globes which shouldn't run more than $20 I'd think. Once we have our new house I'll be getting a rug which I know will run about $150 for each room. I'm also not adverse to knock-off brands or used for name brands so that will save some cost.

ETA: I forgot for my daughter's room my husband built a bookshelf that doubled as the changing table so I'm hoping once his school eases up he can create another one for baby #2.
  • @achae we bought an "antique" dresser at an antique fair and then when we got it home it was completely made of particle board. It's so wobbly we don't feel safe using it. So frustrating, but at least it was only $100. I'm mad at myself for not looking at it more carefully. We're going to go look next weekend but if we don't find anything, I'm going to buy the Hemnes dresser in Navy from Ikea.

I just bought an old dresser and refinished it! $60 plus some paint and it's better quality than almost anything I can buy.

  • I'm a FTM and love second hand shopping. I'm hoping to get everything for baby for under 1k. So far I've spent 65 on a 2 in 1 swing and bouncer, my fetal Doppler which I will probably resell for about 25 in a few more weeks when baby is more active and I can feel it, a boppy with two covers, some swaddlers, and two waterproof crib sheets. No idea if I'll be able to do it but that's my goal. The fancier things will probably come from gifts which I kinda hate but I've been told that no one wants to buy a second hand gift. My MIL is also insisting on buying me a designer diaper bag and she told me if I didn't pick one out that she would pick one that SHE liked. So it kills me that 20% of my total budget is going to a BAG

I think for nursery stuff it will be about 500 (crib, dresser, we are talking about turning a bookshelf into a closet because our nursery room has no closet, glider, paint, accessories)

  • We didn't necessarily have a budget for DDs crib, but wanted something reasonable. Her crib was around $350 I think. I probably wouldn't have gone over $400. We also didn't necessarily budget for the dresser, but it's from Ikea, so not terribly expensive.

We'll pass down the crib and buy a new Ikea dresser. I don't think ok really need to spend much money on decorations (except maybe curtains), fancy bedding, or or anything like that.

I see a lot of people picking out big expensive bedding sets. Babies won't use the quilt/blanket anyway, bumpers are a big no no (and banned in some states), so you're left with a VERY overpriced crib sheet, that will get puked on, peed on, pooped on. I'm a bigger fan of just buying 3 or 4 bottom sheets and that's it.

I just refinished an old one too! I was scared because I didn't know if it would look as good as new but seriously you can't even tell and it looks better than it did before (I ended up painting it white). It takes a bit of time and effort, but you save a ton of money so I totally recommend it if you find one on a good sale somewhere. And I actually re-did my crib too. My crib is great quality, but had teeth marks from my toddler and was espresso so I sanded it and painted it white too. I'm actually pretty proud of myself.. I've always been a  buy it new and save time kind of person so this was a big accomplishment for me.

Nurseries are so expensive, but you can get some good deals if you look on used sites. You just have to be careful about what you buy and who you buy it from, but lots sell great stuff. If you are going to go new, I'd get good quality stuff so that it can last more than one child. That has really helped us!

  • Our budget is small and we're definitely looking into used where possible for the swing and bouncer type items. We bought a nice convertible crib on Amazon during a sale for less than $200. We are going to be using a dresser with a changing pad on top of it instead of a changing table and using a nice oversized chair that was in my office instead of a rocker due to back issues. We registered for sheets, a mobile, a small rug and some organizing totes (we will purchase the items we don't get as a gift with the completion discount). We won't be needing more than that as our townhouse is small. We want to avoid clutter and the extra expense since we are saving money for maternity leave and buying a home.
  • We don't really have a budget, but I am trying to be as thrifty as possible. I purchased a dresser/changing table combo from a yard sale page for $50, and I'm planning on $200 or under for the crib.

  • I didn't really have a "budget" for my last and I don't either for this one. For me, it's all about whether I am getting the quality for the money I spend and if I can get similar quality for a lower price. For my first, got the PBK Kendall crib which, I think is the only reasonably priced crib at PBK at that time (there are more now). I splurged on the PBK swivel rocker and the stroller (Uppababy), but I went with Ikea for the dresser and a bookshelf for the nursery, so I think it was balanced. Our main decorations were various drawings/ paintings that my husband and I had done when we were young that were put into cheap frames from amazon so that was total like $15.
For this one, I plan to use all the same items from my first except I will buy new bedding for her, so I don't really plan on spending too much.

  • Nonspecific amount but we can't go crazy! The crib I like is just under $200. The dresser/ changing table is a family heirloom that I'll be painting. My mom got me a new glider for Christmas. I think after accounting for paint and DIY crafty decor I'll have spent maybe $400 max for everything.

  • When I've looked at furniture (mostly online), I go more by the reviews than by the price. If I find something with good reviews consistently I'd be willing to pay more for it. If I find something that I like but see the price is more than I could ever justify, I'll look for the next one that has consistently good reviews but not quite as high in price.

  • We aren't doing too much, the bedroom that will be baby's nursery has 1 gray wall and the rest are deep blue - we will be painting over the blue with an aqua color. Other than that, I plan on buying lots of used items from FB BST sites or CL such as: crib, swing, and clothes. I don't really have a $$ on budget, but it's basically going to be less than $400 if I had to guess. I may even put off buying a crib for awhile since baby will be bed sharing with myself so I can nurse her.

  • We're getting a ton passed down fortunately including the dresser/changing table combo and crib which of course can cost an arm and a leg for nice ones.  I think I want to "splurge" on a nicer rocking chair than the one my mom is willing to pass down, but we will see.  Less than $500 (including rocker) would be nice.  We'll see...

  • I would love to be able to go all out on a nursery but we just can't. We're using a used bassinet in our room. In babies room (shared with 4yr old dd) we're using dd's old crib and turning her dresser into a changing table then buying plastic drawers for babies clothes. The glider/swing/bouncer all all from when dd was a baby. My sister passed down her car seat/ stroller combo. I did order sheets and a wall banner though. About 25$ total
  • I'm thinking the crib from ikea ($119) and definitely the Hemnes dresser. It's wide enough to use as a changing table, and will grow with baby. I just don't see the point of a changing table. We've gotten a lot of the decor from nautical consignment shops and will be paying a photographer friend for some prints of the piers she's taken. No crib set- I don't see the need to spend money on something the baby is going to puke poop and pee on. We will be registering for tons of crib sheets though!!!

  • @DrillSergeantCat Thanks for the heads up! I saw a bunch of themed ones at BRU last weekend too.
I am hoping this east coast hurricane doesn't impact too much because Monday is supposed to be my attack the registry day :)
  • We had thankfully purchased the couple of things we needed a few weeks ago and will be reusing all baby things we have from my son. I'm glad I was ridiculous organized because we got told last night hubby is being made redundant. Timing beyond sucks and we are pretty stressed right now about the next few months :/
  • since we are talking about cribs- does anyone know what to search to find the tall cribs? I want one that I can vacuum under without moving it or using the attachment.

  • I think we spent around $150 for the crib the first time around. It's still in great condition and doesn't even look used (luckily my son wasn't a beaver). We splurged on the rocking chair. It is a proper upholstered chair that rocks, spins, and reclines. SO WORTH IT. We still spend a lot of time on that chair every day. We also have a changing table/dresser. We won't be getting anything new furniture this time.

We don't necessarily have a budget, but we got our son's nursery furniture at ikea because it was cheap and sleek. We really are impressed with the quality, so we're going to get our daughter the same set, except in white (our son's set is gray/brown) and we're going to get the smaller sized bureau (the hemnes I think 6-drawer) because our daughter's nursery is a little smaller than our son's room and we think it'd feel too crowded with the bigger set. The crib is a convertible and is only $119. The bureau is something like $230 or $250 and we might do a small bookcase if we can fit it.
We aren't going to buy a separate changing table. Just using a changing pad on top of the bureau like we did with our son. I bought a nice almost brand new glider and ottoman off craigslist for $75 and have the changing cart that we used for our son that I'll put in her room to hold diapers, wipes, and blankets.
I think if we plan right, we can outfit her room for around $600-$700.
  • My parents bought the crib for us as a gift at around $200. We're redoing a dresser to use as a changing table so the only big thing we'll probably buy is a glider. I think the one we're leaning towards is in the $300 range but I could have remembered it cheaper than it actually is
  • We are keeping the nursery basically the same with this one and DS is moving to his "big boy room." The only money I will be spending is for new crib bedding and wall decor as DS has made the bedding pretty dingy and the decor either matched the bedding or has DS' name on it. Since crib bedding is pretty expensive but I will paint most of the decor myself, it'll probably be $200 total for the nursery this time around.

  • Luckily I don't really have to buy anything for the nursery since I'm pregnant with a girl and we already have everything from our daughter's. That said, we are making our guest room over into a room for our big girl, and that means that we need two twin beds, a new dresser, a bookshelf, a rug, curtains, comforters, etc. I think when it's all said and done we will probably spend around $1,000. I am trying to buy furniture from ikea- I'm amazed at how many solid wood options they have!- and I love some of their curtains.
  • I don't have a budget. I'm just buying things as the months go on. I'm not going all out though. The baby's crib will be in our master loft so he will technically not have his own bedroom. Still decided on a lot of things. We are buying all new furniture since baby #4 will be our last.
  • My budget is just to not spend too much on all the pinterest ideas I've found! I still have a lot from my twins but since I'm having a girl this time, I am changing up the nursery. Also need a new crib but I'm not going to spend more than $150-200 for it. Last time around we were very lucky that our family wanted to buy us all the big things (cribs, rocker, changing table). So this time I'm doing a lot of diy things. Bought a changing table from a friend for $25 and refinished it, made a changing pad cover, making crib skirt and mobile! Excited for it to all come together

  • We are incredibly lucky. We have three sets of grandparents chipping in for our twin nursery. DH's mom and step dad bought us two convertible cribs, his dad and step mom bought the two mattresses, and my parents are buying the stroller/carseats (not nursery, but big ticket for sure!!). Plus, my mom is a seamstress and is super excited to make curtains, sheets, quilts, bed skirts, etc. That frees us up to buy decor and accent pieces, which we are still trying to be frugal with. We're doing a very specific theme, though (Legend of Zelda), so sometimes it's hard to resist temptation!

I was just thinking about you 4! You find out next week? The week after???? Yaaaay! trying to
  • We spent the most money on a nice crib that I loved ($500) and then went more frugal on everything else -found a cute PBK rug on clearance at the outlet and a lamp table, borrowed a dresser from SIL to make the changing table, found the perfect rocker from target for a cheap price (esp bc a comparable one online was $800!), homegoods for decor, etc. I'm happy with the outcome and my son is still in the room but we are hoping to move him out in time for baby #2 is move in :) Hoping that our crib will be used by many babies and then maybe even stick around in the attic for future grand babies .... Is that planning too far into the future lol?
