Infertility

Chemical pregnancy question

Hi ladies ! I had a chemical pregnancy this last month . I found out I was pregnant on September 7th (Hcg level 15) and then was told later that week (when my level plateaued at 30) that I would have an early miscarriage . I had a period the following week and am now on bc waiting to start ivf meds in a week and a half .

Like a crazy person , I took a pregnancy test today and it came out positive still (though faint ) . I know I shouldn't have tested but just wanted to know if anyone knows how long Hcg can stay in your system ? With my level not being very high ever and my period coming I don't understand ! I know I need to talk to my RE but before I do any insight would be appreciated . I feel ridiculous for testing I was just hoping for a miracle or something .

Re: Chemical pregnancy question

  • I'm sorry ur going through an early loss :-( it's really hard to find info on hcg levels with chemical pregnancies, but in terms of miscarriages it says online if can take 4-6 weeks to leave ur system. However, I feel like since ur levels only got up to 30 that the hcg should have cleared pretty quick.

  • My thoughts are with u. I think you need to talk to ur doctor. With my naturally conceived ectopic pregnancy at 6 weeks my HCG was almost at 1800 and it took a while to get out of the system. But may be there is a chance of miracle and u are pregnant?? That would be awesome. I have heard from one of my coworker that she miscarried and 6 weeks later she was pregnant and she was very surprised because she had a period too and she thought "no way" but it happened. All the best.
  • @mskeenan I feel for you tremendously. Let's say, like @Binnie505 says could actually happen, Would the BC hurt anything? Just curious if it is dangerous if there was still a LO growing in there.

    Married: 8/29/2009
TTC- since we got married (off and on)
TTC with focus: Since July 2015
Currently had 2 rounds of failed IUIs, failed TI monitored cycle
December 2015: Starting 1st IVF cycle
    January 2016: Retrieval
March 2016: Pending Transfer (I have 3 PGS tested embryos waiting for a womb)
April 2016: BFP, the old fashioned way.

  • Thank you ladies for the advice ! I tested this morning and the line was gone . It made me sad but I would rather have it go away so I can move on . I was just hoping somewhere for a miracle . I'm going in for bloodwork on Wednesday to see if I'm ready for my IVF meds . I'm terrified of IVF but at least it'll help my chances . I'm afraid of another chemical pregnancy , though . Ah !!

@emsmama15 No we are still waiting ! They are covering most of the meds (huge blessing ) but we are still waiting to see if the procedure will be covered . If not my DH and I are considering paying out of pocket ... But not sure if now is a good time . Is there ever a good time though ? Ah decisions . I hope to have an answer this week since I'm supposed to start meds a week from Monday !

  • I have read miracles of people's numbers going back up and them eventually giving birth. You're not crazy for having hope. I didn't believe it until aunt flow actually showed up. I really hope you are successful this time around!! I just started follistim after I had a chemical pregnancy last month. Ive read that it's fairly common to have a miscarriage from your first pregnancy, and the chances lesson much more from the next time you conceive. I hope this helps! It definitely keeps us hoping.
What kind of meds were you on (if any) when you had your miscarriage?

I'm so sorry to hear you experienced a loss as well . I hope this month goes better for you . I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers ! Keep me posted on how you are doing !!

  • This is my first time with (also) femara Gonal F and ovidrel, only we are doing TI instead of IUI.
I'll let you know if we are successful, but unfortunately our follicles didn't look promising. How many follicles did you have last round? I'm worried that they are having us trigger with only one slightly mature follicle.
At my doctors, they have this program called the IVF assured program. You should ask if yours has that option. Basically they refund you for the majority of the price if the IVF isn't successful. You pay $2500 only if unsuccessful, then you pay the full amount if it is successful. That way you're not as worried about paying close to 20,000 without a guarantee.
    We are located in Michigan.
Good luck and you're in my prayers also. Keep me updated on how everything goes for you!

  • @alqizwik I am also in Michigan, would you mind sharing via a private message which clinic you go to that offrs that program? I would be very interested in looking into it if we have to go the IVF route. Our insurance covers almost nothing in regards to fertility treatments so we are OOP. It adds up quickly. I am in the south east area of MI. Dont worry about it if you dont want to share, it's still good to know an option like that exists in the state.

Good luck this round. All it takes is 1 follicle!!

  • @vssbrm actually, I don't mind sharing here what clinic it is. They have 3 in Michigan. Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Kalamazoo. They are called The Fertility Center. You should google IVF assured program. It has most of the details there. Good luck! We also don't have insurance to cover fertility treatment, so I understand the struggle. Hoping you don't even need to go that route.
Baby vibes and prayers your way!

  • Thanks @alqizwik I am going to ask about that . I don't know how we are going to pay for it out of pocket but we will find a way if we have to !! I had 3 follicles my last round - but rounds before that I has 1 and 2 follicles I think ? It's true what they say - all it takes is one . I want to say my doctor told me additional follicles don't really increase your chances all that much . But I don't know the real data on that . Good luck to you !!! :)
