Low Platelets at 14 weeks?

Hey there, so I've been doing some research but can't seem to find anyone with a similar experience. I'm getting a bit worried and the doctors seem to be brushing it off like it's nothing, so I'm here for a bit of support and hopefully someone with a similar situation or story.

Last week the doctor called and asked me to redo my blood tests as my platelets showed low at my 8 week appointment at 132. I went back in two days ago and had then retested at 14 weeks and 4 days, now the platelets have dropped to 88! The doctor plans to monitor me weekly, but I'm really concerned what if they continue to drop? We're still pretty early in the pregnancy and it just seems that was a drastic decrease in just a few weeks.

Has anyone had the same experience? Did your platelets increase again? What happened?

  • Really you should be seeing a specialist. A hematologist.
I have a history of ITP, which is a bleeding disorder that causes low platelets. My initial 4 week blood work showed my platelets were low so we redid the test and they were within normal range. My OB told me of they get to 150 or lower I will be seeing a hematologist.
What you need to know is it can determine things for when you deliver your baby. I have heard women with low platelet counts not being able to have epidurals and some other things. I would talk to your OB and see what they say. If you don't get straight answers you may need to think about switching. It does make your pregnancy high risk so I, and this is only an assumption, assume you should have a maternal fetal medicine doctor consulting as well as a hematologist. Not trying to scare you but they really need to give you more info. Also the high risk board is awesome and might have more ladies going through the same.
