Med free (still planning, who did it?)

Just curious about whose birth plan is still on track for med free, birth center, home birth?

Also, i would love to hear any birth stories for those of you who have already had your babies and got to stick with your plan (or if you didn't, but want to share for perspective).

I had my 3rd homebirth and 4th med free birth last Wednesday. The birth story is in the announcement thread.

Re: Med free (still planning, who did it?)

  • Me! I'm a FTM , but my mom had my 6 siblings at home, so it's what's most natural and stress-free for me (hospitals=scary). I'm interested to see how it all plays out because I've read a ton of other birth stories to help me mentally prepare :)

Congrats on your new little one!

  • I still plan on a med-free birth at the hospital.
  • Hoping for med free at the hospital. Your story is an inspiration for me @komorebi !

  • My home birth is back as my plan since baby turned and is head down!! I am praying that it goes as smoothly as the last time. I have had one medicated birth at the hospital and one unmedicated birth at home so far. I am not due until the 26th so I still have a long wait!

Yay for turning baby! How stressful.

@OperaSingerMommy thanks! I am proud of myself. I know women have "big babies" all the time but i never knew if i could do it.
  • I'm planning a med-free hospital VBAC.  I even switched providers at 20w to a midwife/OB group that has a high VBAC/natural birth success rate.  LO is head-down.  I've hired a doula.  I'm putting together a playlist of my favorite songs to sing to (I've heard that singing in labor is great for keeping the breath flowing, staying calm and focused, easing pain, etc.  We'll see if I can really sing through the contractions. :) ) I am so excited and determined to have the birth I didn't have with DD!

Congrats on your natural home birth!
It's great that you switched. Knowing the rate is goodfor helping women successfully vbac means they actually support the process. Good luck!
  • Your birth story was awesome. Still planning on a med-free birth center birth. Baby girl is supposedly head down. I've been practicing what we learned in our birth class and trying not to get freaked out about what is to come. I've still got 4 weeks to keep practicing. I'm excited and terrified.
  • This is my third baby but will be my first attempt at a med free delivery at a hospital with a midwife.  I had two perfect epidural births after spontaneous labor but am really hoping to go without meds this time.  I am strangely excited about it.  I have been in transition before so I know what to expect there, just better prepared this time with how to cope.  Pushing still scares me, but hoping the fact that I have had two extremely short pushing phases with my first two will work in my favor.
I am seeing a chiro once a week to help get baby into the optimal position (my second was sunny side up) and basically doing all I can naturally to help get my body ready.  I just started EPO orally (won't start vaginally until 36 weeks per my MW), been using my exercise ball nightly and just ordered some medjool dates lol.  I am all business this time around.
  • Chiropractic care helps pushing, ime. My last two were perfectly positioned and i had chiro care with them. Pushing is tough but once it's over those first moments are amazing. Good luck!

@cbolton19 if you can use water to labor, either shower or pool i highly recommend it. It definitely helps zone you out.
  • @komorebi A water birth is what I am planning on! I'm excited it is an option, and it is a huge part of the reason we chose to use a birthing center.
  • After reviewing my birth story from my first I realized I practically had a Medfree birth the first time (went through transition while getting my epidural put in). I had a few complications the first time that made things more challenging. Baring complications this time around I have decided to try for med free.

  • I'm a FTM planning a med free birthing center birth. Like a poster said before, my mom had us all at home with a midwife. So, I am confident in my ability to do it. Hearing your story also helped! Congrats on your new addition! I am due the 20th.
  • Planning for natural birth at a free standing birth center. Our house just isn't right for a home birth, too much carpet, etc. First 1 was supposed to be a home birth and ended up a hospital transfer. Thank God, I still was able to have a natural birth. Long story. Lol
Second was born at free standing birth center. Fabulous experience!!
Excited to go back for baby 3. I am 36 weeks now but guessing I will go late again. First was 3days late and second was 6 days late. Lol
  • Still planning a med free water birth at the birthing centre, but I still have just under 4 weeks to go (maybe even 6 if she's late) so anything could change in that time. I don't even know if she's head down yet. Won't find out til my next midwife appointment next Wednesday *fingers crossed*
  • I had a med free birth with my daughter and plan to do the same with this one! Hoping all goes as planned :)
  • I am hoping for a med free birth at a birthing center. Baby girl seems quite content where she is but I have been getting some signs so I am hopeful that maybe hopefully something will happen this weekend!
  • I had a hospital birth but I had to be induced with pitocin, but was able to go med free otherwise. It was rough, and baby was 8 pounds, and laying on his side instead of face down.
  • My second baby was like that. My labor was 6 hours with her but i pushed for two of those hours.
  • Planning med free birth at a hospital. Hoping she decides to come on her own since I'm due Sunday and having quite a but of contractions. If not, I'll be induced next week for medical reasons, but hopefully I'll still be med free other than induction meds.
  • I was due yesterday! Still in route for a med free home birth, we have a birthing tub ready to go! Any moment labor can start and I can't wait :)
  • 36 weeks tomorrow, I'm hoping for a med free birth in a hospital with a midwife. I have hired an amazing doula, my birth plan is written up. I just have to wait for my appointment next Wednesday to see the position of my sweet little one, get my GBS test, and to go ahead with counseling for hydrotherapy. If everything looks good then it will be onward and upward with one of the best experiences in life!

Typing this alone has me so excited. Your birth story was so very inspirational @komorebi! Congratulations, and many good and healing vibes to you and your family on the arrival of your son!
  • Planning for a med-free VBAC at a hospital (first was breech). My OB is a natural birth proponent, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
  • Planning a med free hospital birth. Went most of the way with my son (minus about 1.5-2 hours of 7.5) and med free with my daughter. Hoping for an easy time this time as well but I'm keeping my mind open per SO's request if it gets too bad
  • I had a unmedicated natural birth in a hospital, so I know it can be done. It's just a matter of committing to it in your mind and working past the pain. I was in labor for 21 hours, but the first ten were at home and I found them very manageable. There's a huge difference between the first, second and third stages of labor. I also think when your waters breaks makes a big difference in terms of the intensity of the contractions.

My only advice to women who are considering NUCB is to really educate yourself on what your can reasonable expect during labor and have a supportive team of people who respect your birth plan. I know it's hard to let go, but I think it's important to allow yourself to make decisions as you're in labor and let go of some of the control that we hold so tight to. There are so many things we can't control in labor. Just try to take it one contraction at a time.
  • I'm still planning on going med free. I would love to do a home birth, but I live in the middle of nowhere so it's not an option.
  • I'm loving all these stories! Keep 'em coming, ladies. :)
  • My plan is to get the baby out safely ! I'm not planing for the epidural, last time I never planned for it either but opted for it at 4.5 cms because after 5 cms they won't give you it anymore, and that freaked me out !
  • FTM, still planning a med-free hospital birth... 3.5 weeks or so to go!

Hoping to use hypnobabies/relaxation techniques and labor at home as long as possible.

Our hospital seems very supportive of any choice whether it be meds or med free ... fingers crossed everything goes well!

It is really fun & encouraging reading all you ladies' stories!!!

That's such an odd cut off. I could see 7 cms since getting the epi would probably coincide with transition and be a waste, but 5 cms could mean much more labor for some women.
