Cleaning gums?

I was googling about why my LO sucks on her hand and came across a site that mentioned you should be cleaning babies gums after each feeding and at bedtime.... Does anyone else do this that often? I honestly haven't been cleaning her gums at all! I didn't even know I was supposed to do anything before her teeth came in...oops!!

Re: Cleaning gums?

  • I had thought ant when I should start doing it but haven't done it either

  • Nope haven't done it either
  • I do it twice per day when I brush my older kids' teeth. I just figured it's good to get in the habit early.

How do you clean your baby's gums!? What do you use!?
  • A washcloth is fine to use. They also make a banana brush (get it at BRU or Amazon) it's a good idea to get into the habit so when teeth come in baby is use to having this done.
  • I read about this before DD was born. I asked the pedi if it was necessary and she said no. Does anyone know why they say to clean their gums (besides getting in the habit)?
  • From the August board but my LO was born 7/28 so I look over here a lot. If you don't do it it's not the end of the world but it is good to do if you can remember and especially when they have teeth. For one just to get in the habit but if you are formula feeding formula does have sugars in it so it's not good to just sit on gums all the time. I used to work in a dentist office and it's never too young to start taking care of kids gums and teeth. It was so sad to see little kids who already had bad teeth and gums from not brushing enough. That being said I'm still not the best at wiping my LO gums every day. I'm trying to get in the habit if at least wiping every time he's getting his face washed in the bath.

I just use a wet washcloth :) Super easy!
  • I have one of those finger brush things. I try to do it when I give LO her vitamin d drop, so once a day :) good habit to get into if you can remember one more thing (yea right!!?)

  • Yup I do once a day at bath time. I have been meaning to more, but I figure once is better than none ;) and I too have just a little finger slip thing that has small rubber bristles on one side and ridges on the other, it came as part of a 4 pack of the different stages for a baby
  • Used the finger slip thing like once or twice but really like using a wet washcloth since you can really feel the gums when rubbing them!
