Waking up to pump?

Our LO is occasionally starting to do a 5-6 hour sleep stretch at night. For those that are BF, are you waking up to pump? If so, is it because you're in pain or to keep supply up? In other words, if not in pain, is it necessary to still pump?

Re: Waking up to pump?

  • I don't wake up to pump anymore unless I'm in pain (like this morning). For the first few weeks I would wake up, feed her, then pump but once the pediatrician gave us the green light to feed on demand during the night, I took the opportunity to get some sleep instead. I will say that since I've stopped pumping in the evenings I've noticed a big drop in my supply. It's not really an issue because I had an over supply to begin with but if you don't, I wouldn't recommend eliminating all night time pumping sessions. Maybe minimize if you're desperate for that extra shut eye but eliminating them altogether may have adverse effects.

This exactly! I had an oversupply and once I started sleeping instead of pumping, my supply dropped. I actually had to start using my freezer stash that first week. Now, three or four weeks later, I sleep 7 or 8 hours and then pump when I get up. My supply picked back up and I'm finally able to replenish my stash. I feed and pump much more while I'm awake now than before and I think that's what helped.
  • Nope. If she sleeps I sleep. I do pump one side every night immediately after she eats the last time and I have gotten my toddler to bed (around 7:30 or 8) She usually sleeps till between 1 and 3 (so about a 5-7 hours stretch though occasionally longer), then is up again between 3:30 and 5:30 and then up for the day around 6:30 or 7. She is 8 weeks old tomorrow and if she's sleeping at night (and my toddler is sleeping at night) so am I. So far my supply is adjusting to what it needs to be and I don't seem to have an over (or under) supply with this one. I nursed for over 18 months with my first daughter and never woke to pump once (although she was a more frequent night waker :P)
  • I did with my first (1) to maintain my supply because I'd be going back to work and pumping and (2) to build a freezer stash.
Eventually I cut back to doing it 2-3 times a week just to keep my supply up as he got older and I was working/ pumping more than nursing.
  • My daughter usually sleeps 5-6 hours at night and I was not waking up to pump...it didn't change my supply but I would be hurting in the morning though. On Tuesday I found out I had mastitis from blocked ducts, which I personally think is because I was going too long with out feeding the baby or pumping. I now wake up once in the middle of the night to pump and it has made a huge difference. I don't wake up engorged anymore and haven't been getting blocked ducts. Hopefully the mastitis goes away soon! So if you are very engorged and hurting in the morning and getting blocked ducts, I would recommend pumping once in the 5-6 hour span so you don't risk getting mastitis (it's very painful!)

  • As long as you're not going over 6 hours I think you'll be ok, but I would recommend pumping after your LO wakes up to get whatever they didn't eat. Doing the pumping afterwards should keep your supply up and give you a freezer stash
  • Nope, my son sleeps 5-6 hours, feeds (around midnight or 1) and goes back to sleep until 5. Usually I feed him at 5 then pump. I haven't noticed a drop in my supply I do wake up VERY full but that's okay more to stash away.
