Swollen Feet / Preeclampsia paranoia

Im a FTM Brit and overweight - my feet / ankles have started to swell up quite a bit now most days - not like totally deformed but rather puffy and uncomfortable especially with shoes on and I'm sure it's due to the water retention and additional weight and I know it can be perfectly normal... I normally have my feet up a lot in the day but when I don't hello big feet.

I know that "sudden" swelling can be a sign of preeclampsia... And I'm like is this sudden? is this a gradual normal amount ...? I'm more at risk of it with my weight and so I'm kinda OCD about it. My blood pressure was perfect last week and I haven't had headaches and any of the other symptoms - I did a urine test last week and I'm sure they would have let me know if there were proteins etc- just that good old paranoia as I have one symptom - fat feet. Anyone else feeing this or getting paranoid about things they probably don't have?!

Thanks!!

Re: Swollen Feet / Preeclampsia paranoia

  • Seems normal to me, based on what I have read. I prop my feet most of the day, but by evening my feet are puffy. Not really swollen, just fat. I can't wear my ballet flats any more, even in the morning.
My BP has been very good, ranging from 90/50 to 110/60. This was my prepregnancy range.
Not much to worry about, just sad to have sausage toes :(

Two years, two losses and three IUIs...

  • I had my appointment today and I've been having severe swelling. My whole body, including my face and extremities, have been swelling so bad that I can't bend them like normal. I took a 24 hour difference photo between when I was swollen and the next morning and when I showed it to my doctor she gasped lol. And even then she said she is doubtful I have preeclampsia because I haven't had headaches or blurred vision, etc. She is having me do a test though just in case.

If my sausage BODY is okay, I think your sausage tootsies will be just fine! Lol. Soak them in Epsom salt. It does wonders and then guilt your SO for a foot rub. ;) good luck!
  • I have the same fears, since I had preeclampsia with DD. If you can spare a few dollars and a few minutes with a pharmacist, a BP cuff is fairly cheap and really easy to learn to use. It has made me feel a thousand times better when I get freaked out. Just a thought.
  • If it is swelling from being on your feet or having them down, I might suggest compression hose. My best friend used them every work day when she was pregnant. She said on the weekends it was noticeable that she wasn't wearing them. Her feet and ankles would be huge.
I'm guessing it is mostly retention, but if you keep swelling with compression I might be more concerned.

I'm sure you are being monitored if you are high risk.

Poor lady. I'm sorry you are swelling like that but glad you had the foresight to take photos for the doctor. Good luck with the tests.

  • I think you would have more symptoms than just swelling in the feet. However, I would be paranoid as well. If u do get other symptoms, or you just can't let it go, call the doc
    Or midwife. Xoxoxo
  • Thanks for the advice all!!! :-)
  • With my first I started swelling around 25-26 weeks. Swelling in feet/ankles is normal. I would show my doc at every appointment and he said it was normal. They say when you start swelling in hands and face that is when you should be alarmed. But if you have any worry or thought that something may be wrong contact your doctor ASAP!!!

  • Does a progressively growing double chin count as swelling in the face? ;-)

Called the hospital last night as I got a migraine - my two triggers are caffeine and LED/ strong sunlight but I was just watching TV at 1030pm which was really unusual but I have a cold/ bunged sinus so that coupled with bad sleep I'm sure were a perfect storm. My eyesight just went I could not see so I thought better just check in for reassurance after re reading the symptoms. They weren't concerned as I have a history of migraine so I wasn't either - better to be safe than sorry - can still feel the headache today so no day on the coast for me. Just rest and lots of water...

Really lucky to be able to talk to a midwife at 1030pm on Saturday night. Thank you NHS.
