At your 3 hour glucose test..

were you not allowed to eat the entire time? Doc told me to make sure I fast and that they'd give me something to drink then draw my blood every hour for three hours. Didn't even think to ask about food during and afterward. I can't go more than an hour without at least a snack so 3 hours would be tough!

Also, is the glucose drink the same as the 1 hour test or do you have to drink more or something different?

Re: At your 3 hour glucose test..

  • You can't eat during the test. You can drink a little water (but not tons) while you wait for each blood draw. I brought a cheese stick to eat as soon as my last blood draw. Then stopped for a pritien rich breakfast on my way home.

  • You can't have anything to eat until after the 3 hours. I had a hard time with it but went to my favorite sandwich shop right after as a little reward. My drink was the same but it had double the amount of sugar as the first one. It was orange flavored and disgusting.
  • You can not eat before or during, bring a snack for after. The glucola drink is stronger. In the first hour I started feeling very bad. I got really uncomfortable and hot/clammy, and nauseas. Seriously thought I was going to throw up. They had a room I could lie down in and I totally took advantage. I set my alarm for my next blood draws and closed my eyes. I did start to feel better but stayed in the lie down room... I liked the privacy vs the waiting room.
Not telling you this to scare you, I wish I would have known what I was in for. I did steadily feel better into the second hour.
Bring a yummy snack for after and treat yourself to a nice lunch.
  • oh wow, it's going to suck! anything for baby.. sigh

No eating until the 3 hours are over. Since the 3 hour drink has twice as much glucose, it made me very nauseous and my heart was pounding for the 1st hour. It did get better after though.
  • I failed my one hour too, I brought my SO to my blood work with me, I had to fast for 8 hours however I fell asleep early and by the time I woke up it was too late to eat anything else so I ended up fasting for like 14 hours! (I get really emotional when I'm hungry) within the first hour I was bawling because I felt like I was starving, the second hour I relaxed a little, then the third hour I got very angry. The nurse was trying to tell me about her plans for the weekend then asked me about mine, I actually snapped at her and was like "maybe if you ever take my god damn blood I can feed both myself and my child!"

I honestly felt so bad, after I ate something I went and got a card and a little teddy bear for the nurse to apologize. She just laughed and told me she understands that I was just grumpy and that it was okay.
  • I wasn't allowed to eat anything until after the final blood draw. Then they offered me juice and crackers!
  • Omg i have to do it friday i just barely failed my 1 hour
  • I failed my one hour too. Going on friday for the lovely three hour test. I am planning on bringing a snack for after as well.

I would suggest bringing something to read or do during, instead of relying on the waiting room television. During the three hours there were so many cooking segments on the talk shows on mine.  It made me hungrier and angrier.

Also, this may sound obvious but don't eat anything remotely sugary as your post-glucose test meal.  I was excited and decided to have "breakfast" in the form of french toast and ended up feeling worse.
  • Make sure you bring something to keep you occupied. I brought my computer and the hospital had wifi. My sons birthday party invitations got ordered and I ordered baby a rocking chair for her nursery. As horrible as it was, at least I felt productive.
  • I got really sick and emotional too. Good luck ladies, bring snacks to eat as soon as that final draw is done!

  • While not fun, it wasn't the worst. I had to fast for 12 hrs with mine. Drink is 100grams sugar this time and I got to pick my flavor. Fruit punch was way better than the orange for the one hour! Nothing to eat or drink during the test except limited water. Definitely suggest bringing something to do. They told me I wasn't allowed to walk around much as this could alter the test so I was really happy I had my computer. High protein meal soon after. I still crashed hard this afternoon. Like I said experience wasn't too bad. Going into it with the right mindset helps a ton!
  • Just had mine last week. Best advice is to bring a snack with you that you can eat as soon as they take the last blood work. I was slightly light headed leaving and was glad to be munching on a cookie in the way out (that was my reward for myself!). I passed but found out that my last number was super low which explained the light headed ness.

I did mine on Sunday and passed thankfully. I fasted for about 12 hours before and I brought some croissants with me, which I kept smelling. They were burning a hole in my bag (figuratively speaking). I inhaled them as soon as I was out the door. The glucola drink is twice as sweet, and I don't recommend chugging it. I brought a straw and that helped.
There was another woman in the waiting room doing the 3 hours test and she brought her laptop and watched a movie. I wish I had thought of that because I couldn't concentrate on my book.

Edit- I also took a nap that afternoon. Try and leave your day open in case you get super tired
  • I just did my 3 hour yesterday. I fasted for 10 hours. Before I went to bed the night before I had a high protein snack. The glucola is double the amount of sugar and seemed thicker to drink. My first hour gave me a headache and made me feel hot and clammy. The second hour I started feeling better. The third hour I felt extremely tired as my sugar level crashed. Biggest advice bring something to do. My office wouldn't let me walk around other than to the bathroom. They wouldn't let me have anything more than a sip of water to get the taste out of my mouth. And she said I couldn't lie down and no sleeping. I brought crackers and cheese to eat immediately. And like PP don't eat something high in sugar when done. Also I felt very lethargic the rest of the day so if you can plan to be able to rest afterwards.
  • I did mine yesterday and it isn't always as bad as people make it out to be.  The drink is disgusting but other than that I got a room and a comfy rocker all to myself.  I watched TV, checked facebook, ordered a couple things online and just enjoyed the peace a quiet :-)  I second the thought of bringing something to eat immediately after the last draw.  I brought a granola bar and then chowed down on some Mexican food as a reward.

  • When I did the 3hr I had a bad experience. The drink made me have some what of a panick attack. that was during the first and second hour, when it hit the third hour I felt better. I did not have an appetite though, after I was finished.
