December 2015 Moms

diagnosed with gout

I'm 31 weeks with twins. Suddenly Friday night I had horrible pain in my heels, swelling and will as inflammation. The pain was sharp to the degree I was not able to walk or even put my foot on the floor. I went to a doctor yesterday and he thinks that I have gout and prescribed me a steroid to alleviate the inflammation as one dose of 50mg. But im still histitate to take it. I'm just afraid that this might harm my babies. Am l irrational? Or I should just take it? Any one of you ladies has experience with gout during pregnancy? XOXO

Re: diagnosed with gout

  • Is it unbearable or going to endanger baby? If yes then just take it. I doubt they'd tell you to take something that would harm your baby, or at least not something where the risks weren't outweighed by what momma has to have to stay healthy for baby. You could look up its pregnancy category it might make you feel better.

  • I think steroids are one of the things moms get when their babies are at risk for coming early to help develop their lungs... I don't think it will harm your kiddo... And you may do yourself more harm by not taking care of the foot..if you are truly worried contact your OB and ask them about side effects of the drug and about side effects of not treating your current condition.
  • I struggled with this myself after being prescribed a course of steroids for a systemic autoimmune problem. The short answer is it depends on what steroid you were prescribed. Only some steroids pass the placenta, and therefore can actually affect the baby. Also, the shorter term the use, the less likely you are to have complications. So one dose of prednisone, for example, is unlikely to cause any problems for you, and won't pass the placenta to the baby. My doc was perfectly happy to prescribe me a week of prednisone, but would not consider longer-term use. If the doctor who prescribed it to you is any good, they wouldn't prescribe you something dangerous, but they certainly should have had a conversation with you about the risks so you could be informed.
  • Sorry to hear your dealing with this! I would discuss more with your doc or talk to your pharmacist as they are experts on drugs.
  • Thank you ladies so much for your input and support. Well my blood work ( uric acid) turns out to be normal, and for some reason that dr still think it is gout. I have seen my obgyn today and he thinks that my increased body weight caused that heel inflammation or it might be simply plantar fasciitis. So he adviced me to rest till Monday at home, take Tylenol and used iced pack over my heel. I'll see if this going to help.
