I keep going back and forth in my head about this one. On one hand baby wont be moving/walking a round for a while. On the other hand things get a lot busier once you have the baby so it may be beneficial to do it now. The jury is still out for me. I didn't put any of the stuff on my registry. Maybe if you will be needing a gate or something larger it may be worth throwing it on there.
You need to have it done by the time your LO is mobile. If you start baby proofing around when they learn to roll over, you'll probably be able to be done what you need to do by the time they start crawling.
I'm not really doing a registry as this is my fourth, but I wouldn't side-eye it on anyone else's registry. You'll probably need it by the time baby is 3-6 months old.
Honestly, DS is almost one and we still haven't actually baby proofed. He's been fully walking for a few months, climbs and is into everything, but we keep things clean and he can't get to anything that can hurt him. If a need arises we figure out a lock then. There are a few things we have locked to keep the cat out though.
Baby proofing stuff, like socket plugs and baby gates, are SUPER annoying and will just get in the way while you're dealing with a newborn. At least, that's my thinking. I got rid of my baby gates because climbing over them to use the stairs was driving me nuts!
We already put gates up at the top and bottom of the stairs. This is mainly so the dogs (we have two rescues: American bulldog/pit mix and another pit mix) are aware they no longer are allowed upstairs. We didn't want to associate LO coming home and too much change and have the dogs have issues with this so it was necessary early! Kind of annoying initially but now I'm used to it and it's nice not having dog hair upstairs and having to vacuum both the downstairs and upstairs every day. I did all the electrical plugs one day last week when I got bored just because I already bought them and we don't use about 30+ ground level plugs in our house. I'll have DH do the rest before LO starts to be mobile. I didn't put any baby-proofing things on my registry because I'm neurotic about safety and germs and knew I'd buy it all myself early anyway......but I think it's perfectly okay to do so since a good gate is expensive and all the other little things do add up.
We put a gate at the bottom of the stairs to keep the dog from going upstairs before we had a baby. We wouldn't need to worry about it for the dog now as she can hardly walk (she's almost 16), but it keeps DD from going upstairs unless we are with her (she's 2 now). We put a gate at the top of the stairs when she started crawling and trying to stand up because I would take her upstairs where it's carpeted. We only have one room upstairs that is a bonus room. Crawling is around 6 months? Rolling over was around 3-4 months.
The plug covers were already in from the previous owners of the house. We put locks on the kitchen and bathroom cabinets when DD starting getting a lot more mobile. We did most things as we needed it.
These are the gates that we have. They match up with our stairs:
