Tubes tied after birth

Since I will be 41 when my LO is born this December, I know for certain that I do not plan to have any more children. That being the case, I would like to possibly have my tubes tied and I have heard that some women do it while they are already in the hospital having just given birth. Are there advantages/disadvantages to this that you are aware of?

Re: Tubes tied after birth

  • My understanding from my OB is that they can only do this if you have your birth via c-section.  They will just tie the tubes before they sew you back up.  Otherwise, you would need to make an appointment to have it done.  Not sure what you birth plans are, but wanted to share.

  • My sister wanted to have it done after her 2nd & it was supposed to be done after a section. She went early & had a resident do her section & the resident claimed she couldn't do it b/c there was too much scar tissue. Now my sister has all sorts of problems with birth control. It was a nightmare.
  • My mom had it done with me. She was 33 years old. It was like @rockinmathchic said. It was already a planned c-section so she scheduled it to be done while she was already open. A former co-worker of my husband's had hers done the same way with her last. Otherwise I've heard you have to wait a certain period of time and go back in to have it done. I'm not sure I've really heard anything as far as pros and cons either way besides it's easier if you can have it done while you're already open.

You'd also need to check with your hospital policies if you are having a C-section, by chance. I delivered at a Catholic hospital and they will not perform tubal ligations. Even if I had a C, I would have still had to schedule the procedure for a later date at a different hospital.

I lurk. I snark. I offer sound advice if you're not BSC. You may not like me. I'm okay with it.

  • My sister delivered vaginally (her 4h) and they tied her tubes the following day.  I think it really depends on your situation, your insurance, your doctor and the hospital.
  • I am getting my rubes tied the day after delivery as long as I have the baby vaginally. I have had my other two vaginally. This is the policy at my hospital. It will be done laproscopically. So one to three small incisions in the abdomen. If for some reason I have to have a c-section, then they will do it then. I know there will be discomfort, but I will already be uncomfortable from delivery so might as well heal from the two events at the same time rather than have to go back in. The hospital here makes women who want a tubal take a class. I have done that, plus I am a nurse. If you have any questions, let me know.
