Question! -Proper car seat placement

Hi mommas!
So, when we left the hospital with my little the nurse checked how the car seat was installed in the car as standard procedure. She made sure to tell us the bar you hold the car seat with must be pushed all the way back. We have done this every time since. But, I don't see many other moms do this and I wanted to ask if any of you ladies do this? Or know why it is necessary? I ask because I keep a toy giraffe with black, white and red on there now and little man loves to look and reach for them when we are out. But because I put the bar back, car rides are a bit stressful because he get fussy pretty fast. I'm looking for a safe okay to put the bar back in the carrying position during car rides so LO can play but obviously will not do it if there is a specific reason the nurse showed me to keep the bar pushed back. I hope this makes sense! Lol. Thank you ladies :)

Re: Question! -Proper car seat placement

  • It depends on the car seat manufacturer. Some say to leave it up, some say to leave it back, and some it doesn't matter. It all depends on how it was crash tested. Read your manual and it should tell you what to do with your particular car seat. You should never ride with it in a different position than your manual okays simply because it was crash tested that way and may fail to protect your son adequately if not used properly.

For example on page 16 of this manual (for a Snugride 30) it says not to use in vehicle in the B or C positions shown, but A, D, and E would be okay. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/61773/Graco-Snugride-30.html?page=16

  • Oh thank you! I should have mentioned that! We use the Chicco Keyfit 30 car seat. I will have to go look at my baby drawer for our manual. I'm sure I could also find it online. Thanks!

Looks like you can use it in any of the locked positions, but it does specifically say not to hang anything from the handle because it can injure the child in sudden stop or crash. Personally I'd say that it up to you then on how hard the things are you are hanging. The Car Seats for the Littles group generally advises nothing in the car that you wouldn't throw at your child's head as hard as you can. If it is something very soft not a big deal, but if it is something harder it is not likely to stay hooked to the handle in a severe crash so just keep that in mind.
  • Just finished reading the manual. Thank you for your help! What a cool link haha. Yes, the giraffe is a soft plush one with just red, black and white fabric and plush hanging from each of its feet. But it does have a little plastic mirror on the 4th foot. I'd rather be safe. Also considering it only velcrows around the bar. I'll just keep doing what we've been doing and pushing the bar back. Thank you for that tip of throwing the toy. Hopefully little one just gets used to car rides a little more :(
  • I have never ever put the handle bar back like that. I don't know anyone who does either.

Trapped in the quote box... I don't know anyone that leaves it up to be honest. I know they have handle toys and such, but I've never seen anyone with them. It becomes a huge sight barrier with 2+ kids who want to see out the windows on both sides - particularly with 2+ rear-facing. Personally I never left it up with my first though either despite my carseat being okay in either position according to the manual.
  • Wow, this had never even crossed my mind. I always leave the bar up just because. Convenience I guess, just to grab quickly, I don't know. I didn't even think there was a reason not to. But, I did now check my manual and it said its safe in the car in any of the positions. Thanks for posting though because it made me think about it.
  • There's a sticker right on my car seat that says the handle should be up when driving.

  • I am a little late joining this ---but during my car seat inspection at the hospital I was told by the inspector to always leave the bar up because in case of an accident having it up can act as a "roll bar." I also have the Chicco Keyfit 30....I'm sure different people will give you different opinions though! :)
  • That is a great point @emilyce30 ! Thank you for letting me know :) I'm a FTM and question/research just about everything!!
