Vitamin D in first trimester?

Hello all!!
I have a question regarding supplements in the first trimester. Folic acid is a must. But what about Vitamin D? Does anyone have any idea? I know it is okay in 2nd and 3rd trimesters. I am curious specifically about first trimester. My appointment is 3 weeks away so that is why asking moms-to-be here! Thanks in advance!!

Re: Vitamin D in first trimester?

  • I would think its ok since my doctor just prescribed me 50,000 mg / week of Vitamin D. Call your doctor to check. It'll put your mind at ease :)

  • Many prenatal vitamins have vitamin D. I think it's better to take PNV rather than guess about dosages.

  • Thanks ladies
    I like the PNV idea!
  • We're big vitamin D people, so we take 5,000 iu a day. So I'll take that on top of the PNV (which only has like 400iu in it) I did this all last pregnancy too and not pregnant with my multi. I would talk to your doctor though obviously and find out what is best for you. You can have your blood taken and ask them to run a 25 hydroxy (vitamin d test) and figure out where your levels are. Good luck!
  • My doctor told me to take Vitamin D daily even TTC.  And continue to take it through pregnancy.
  • I'm taking a vitamin D supplement, but only because the bloodwork from my first appointment came back low.
  • My doc put me on 2,000 IU of extra vitamin D along with my PNV. Got labs done earlier this week and my Vit D level is still low
