Got bit by a cat...(vent, mainly)

I work as a veterinary technician in an animal hospital, and yesterday we were prepping a cat for surgery. The cat proceeded to freak out and try to jump off the table. I was trying to catch him and wound up with my finger in his mouth. Ouch. Went to urgent care and got put on oral antibiotics (Augmentin). But this morning when I woke up, my finger was swollen to twice its normal size and extremely red and sore. It was spreading down my hand and I had the telltale "red line" starting to go down my arm. I went to the ER and got admitted to the hospital overnight on IV antibiotics for the infection.

Obviously the doctors and nurses are aware I'm pregnant and making sure every med they give me is baby-safe, but I can't help but sit here and fret that my baby will somehow be affected by all this nonsense. Plus I'm going nuts stuck in this hospital bed and would kill to be able to go home and take a hot shower. Ugh.

  • Maybe the extra blood flow just enhanced the bite even more.

Hopefully it's not anything major and glad they got it under control.

  • Yikes! I'm sorry you are going through that. I was bit in the face by a cat 2 years ago (right before my wedding, it was great...) and was in the hospital for 4 days. So I can relate to that, but I am sure those doctors are keeping a very close eye on baby and making sure everything is ok! You got in quick for the antibiotics and although the hospital is not fun, it's the best place to be when fighting something like that so they can monitor everything. I hope you heal quickly!
  • I'm also a tech and got bit like 3 years ago. Same exact thing happened, except with a stray cat with no rabies vacc history! Ugh talk about a headache! Idk what the laws are where you live/work, but I know for me we had to get the health department involved and the cat, regardless of being stray, had to be quarantined for 10 days. Darn cats. I'm definitely not afraid to use the tank after that! FX for quick healing!!!

The people who brought the stray in, to be spayed kept her, and she turned out to be pregnant which is probably why she acted out. To this day, every time I see her on the schedule I flinch and don't like working with her even though she's been fine since.
  • Thanks for the well wishes everyone! @paytonpedro, that's nuts. I definitely agree with you about using the tank from now on - we were masking the cat down when it freaked out and got away. Silly me for thinking wrapping the cat in a towel beforehand would be enough restraint! She was so sweet that I let my guard down, only for her to spaz out.
  • Ugh, cat bites are so nasty. I'm a vet tech as well and got a nice bite a few years ago. I'm sorry this happened while you are pregnant, it adds so much stress to an already not-fun situation.

  • Oh no! Sorry that happened to you. I was by by a puppy (whom I was trying to save, might I add!) while not pregnant. Sucks. I also hear you about the hospital, I hate hospital beds, I've had 2 cs and I hate being there those 2-3 days! I can't sleep or be comfortable! Hope you get better soon!

Ugh I jinxed myself!!!! She's coming in Saturday morning.
    Eta to add WAHH
  • Yes, hospital beds are the absolute worst. My behind is so sore from laying here! I'm a FTM and now praying that I don't have to have a C-section, because I don't think I can handle 2 to 3 days of this nonsense!

@paytonpedro - :( She heard you talking about her...
  • No call, no shows are acceptable in this circumstance, right?

Lol jk. I must be brave!
  • I was on a rigorous course of antibiotics, pain meds, and fluids when my appendix was removed. There was a stone in it and the pathology report took FOREVER to come back, it didn't spread, yay. But I was so bored and so worried. Turns out my baby is now ahead of her schedule and perfectly fine. I know it's nerve racking but remember : cave men had babies and they ate raw meat and never showered! We've got the nice doctors and GOOD food to help us. Hopefully you have a TV at least.

Also in most hospitals the beds in the delivery wards and recovery rooms are way way different since they're designed for multiple nights.

Either way, I hope you get your shower soon! I hope kitty is okay as well, since I'm sure you were both frightened! Our vet tech was scratched by my cat once, he was a kitten and he was going through multiple organ failure, thanks to her and the team he is alive and very healthy, all because people like you guys put yourself in harms way for our scared babies
  • Very good point about the cave men! That's what I always try to remind myself of when I start to get overly paranoid about how baby is doing. I'm glad your little bean is doing great also, sounds like your stay in the hospital was much more intense! The kitty who bit me is doing fine, she still got her surgery done and is back at home now. Thank goodness your little kitten pulled through that! I do love my job, especially when we can help heal the really sick ones and get them back home with their owners. It's one of the best feelings ever.

Also, I was discharged earlier tonight and I'm showered and in my own comfy bed. So happy!
  • Sorry to hear about that.  I'm sure the doctors are doing everything they can keeping your baby in mind.

I was a vet tech for 5 years.  I had a couple different cat bites, but never enough to end up in the hospital.  I am definitely a big fan of the tank.  We called it the box.  When my cat goes in to get her teeth cleaned eventually she will definitely have to go in the box.

@paytonpedro a no show no call is definitely appropriate :D
