Tips to prevent stretch marks that do not include cocoa butter?

I hate cocoa butter - the smell of it nauseates me (and that has nothing to do with pregnancy) so I'm looking for an alternative. Preferably something that won't leave me sticky. Anyone have any good suggestions?

  • What I've always been told is if the women in your family got them you will. There really isn't a miracle cream to make them go away or prevent them. I hate the smell of name brand cocoa butter right now but have always used Equate (Walmart brand) cocoa butter and for me the smell is very dull. A friend of mine swears by Preparation H after you give birth, wrapping it with plastic wrap, and sleeping with it soaking for 2 weeks. She said it made all hers go away. i don't know. I didn't get stretch marks until after DD came out and I "deflated." They are now barely visible.

  • Yupp like pp's said, stretch marks are hereditary. Not a thing you can do to prevent them! Only thing you can do is apply lotion to help prevent any itching.

Coconut oil for moisture, but skin elasticity is a genetic feature. No amount of cream, oil or other topical treatment can prevent stretch marks. They start deep down in the tissues (because of the stretching of the skin) where topical treatments cannot penetrate.

So, if you are moisturizing to alleviate itching, discomfort or simply to feel like you are being proactive-- alright.

Please don't be discouraged if you still get them. Often some women skate on SM until after birth.

  • If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen no mater how much moisturizer you use, unfortunately. I used to be an assistant to a plastic surgeon and he would always say if he could invent something to prevent or get rid of stretch marks he would be the richest man in the world...
  • Nothing to prevent or even treat them, just time really. Any lotion that can help the itching is nice though.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I mean this in a funny way: go back and change your genetics!?!

But in all seriousness, if you're going to get them, you're going to get them. I slather on cocoa butter daily but I know it won't change a thing. I think I do it out of hope.
  • Well, I do appreciate the feedback. I suppose the good news is I'm done with that disgusting cocoa butter. If I can't do anything to prevent them, I'm not putting myself through that anymore. Thanks, all!

  • Vitamin E oil works best!
  • Vitamin E oil works best!

I have found that works well to reduce the appearance of scars. I have used it on a scar on my face and my arm and it helps make them less visible. Im not sure if it works in preventing anything, but it can't hurt!

  • Agreed with everything already posted, but I used earth mama angel baby tummy oil to help with itching and it was so much more tolerable than cocoa butter!

  • Coconut oil is amazing but it won't prevent stretch marks. Keeping your skin moisturized can help the severity of them but will in no way prevent them. I mix palmers with coconut oil after every shower and my skin is super soft.
  • Stretch marks occur when the dermis stretches too much and rips. Oils, creams and lotions only get into the epidermis, the layer above the dermis. No oil, cream or lotion is going to make a difference to stretch marks. Scars are different, they are in the epidermis which is why they can be remedies by topical treatments. That being said, skin itches as it stretches and regular lotions can be super helpful in that situation. Stretch marks are genetic, if your mom got them, you'll be more likely to get them.
  • Bio-oil is a miracle worker! It got rid of stretch marks on my boobs in a couple of weeks! https://bio-oilusa.com/en-us :) Good luck finding an alternative that works for you!! xx
