Am I actually going into labor???

I'll be at 33 weeks tomorrow and my doctor says I'm "manifesting preterm labor." I've been having contractions since 28 weeks, but for my own medical reasons I can't take any of the medications to stop contractions.

I had a positive fFN on Monday and my cervix is about half the length that it should be at this point in pregnancy. And, just now when I went to the restroom, I had some rusty colored discharge... I'm thinking maybe that could've possibly been the bloody show???

Does this all sound like I'll be going into labor anytime now? I have another drs appointment in the morning so I'm hoping they'll be able to tell me more then!

  • This happened to me. I didn't go to L&D as I had an appointment the very next morning. My contractions were not regular so I figured they must be BH, and that alone with the bloody show (as I was told on here) is not enough to warrant a call to my ob. Nevertheless, my ob checked my cervix and then sent me right to L&D and said I should have went sooner. :-/
  • Call dr or go to L&D no reason to risk it
  • Oh gosh OP you make me feel like a hypochondriac - I will see a Dr over much smaller things then this! Always better to be safe then sorry. PLEASE see or speak to your Dr. Goodluck x
  • You guys do things differently over there than we do here! I would def call and just let them know what's happening but in NZ we would hang out at home untill the baby's almost ready to come out before going to the hospital! I'd rather labour at home than a hospital in saying that yours is preterm labour so def a better idea of your at the hospital where help is if needed! Def call and let them know what's happening and they can advise you what to do!
  • That's y i Said because she is preterm hospital would be the best place for her!! But that would be for a dr to decide not us!! You can have a show at any time doesn't mean ya in labour she needs to be seen to determine that we can't help her there! In NZ your midwife would see you at her office to clarify all of this a hospital won't see you here unless it's an emergency it's crazy how political it all is here! A hospital will only see you once your midwife has said yes it's ok to be seen there! And most the time it has to be her that does that checks! Hope the poster has been checked out not worth the risk to be asking strangers instead of Drs!

In the US a lot of times at nights and on weekends the doctor/midwife might not return your call in a timely manner and definitely aren't in the office so the hospital is the only alternative.  The hospitals aren't allowed to turn anyone who may be having a medical emergency away so they check you out in order to determine whether your issue is serious or not.  If it's not serious, you go see your doctor/midwife at the first available opportunity.  If it IS serious, they handle the situation as needed at the hospital.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

GO TO THE HOSPITAL!!!!!!!!!!! How many times do we have to tell people this!? WHY DO YOU TREAT US LIKE WE ARE MEDICAL DOCTORS?!?!?!?!

    :x
I will never understand the need to ask the Internet questions like this. Only a qualified medical professional can answer that.

  • I'm hoping your lack of response is because you're in hospital being checked over?! I hope everything is okay.

In the UK you're encouraged to stay at home til you hit 4cm BUT only when you're considered full term- which is 37 weeks. And you should still contact L&D to discuss your symptoms and see what they want to do. Depending on your history/ what is happening there and then- they will then tell you to stay put or come in. @laura&brad1 that sounds quite stressful for you guys?! As if you want to be thinking about who to call and if you'll be referred!
  • UPDATE:
went to my drs appointment as scheduled today and they told me there was nothing immenent to be concerned about.
Really I was just asking about others personal experiences.
I've seen my dr 5 times in the past 7 days so they've been monitoring me quite closely, including cervical measurements and non-stress tests which is why I asked for opinions instead of rushing to a hospital.

I'm glad everything turned out to be okay, I really am. Next time, it's just best to call and see what your Dr. wants you to do, there is really nothing we can say or do that would benefit you with things like that. We are not medical professionals, we're just strangers on the internet, all we know is you and your child could potentially be at risk and instead of going in, you asked us what to do. I hope all continues to progress okay for you and your LO.
  • @mamavbs it's extremely stressful and I found all this out the hard way after having constant braxton hicks 8mins apart and bleeding my midwife told me to go to the hospital I didn't know whether to go to emergency or maternity so I rang the hospital first emergency said I was to far along do they couldn't see me and maternity told me I could go there but my midwife needed to be the one to check me I was in tears by this stage freaking out and feeling like a pain in the ass! She ended up monitoring me in her office as was a clinic day and checking my cervix etc really made me worry about what would have happened if I had of just turned up at emergency?! Glad everything's ok for you @kaitlynnjason def better to be safe than sorry

@laura&brad1 - is L&D not in the same building as the ER? You can always start in the ER and they can transfer you to L&D. That's what my hospital says to do if I go into labor in the middle of the night or not during "regular" hours. The ER will never turn you away.

But yes at this point if you're told to go to the hospital, L&D is where you end up because they have the baby monitoring equipment.

Also, OP, it is always better to be a pain in the ass than to have something happen to your baby because you thought it best to wait and not bother anyone. I have seen the inside of a hospital more during this pregnancy than pretty much my whole non-pregnant life (as a patient anyway), and even though my LO has always been healthy, I've never once regretted going. My baby's life is more important than inconveniencing a nurse or doctor for a few hours.

In the hospital I'm going to deliver at they are in two separate buildings.. Not far from each other but they are in different buildings.. There is a women's hospital that delivers all the little babies and that has all things maternal and prenatal there.. They have a small NICU in the women's hospital and a bigger one if the baby has to have any kind of surgery in the main hospital.. They are connected by a walkway.. But in the smaller hospital on the other side of town they are all in one building.. So I guess what I'm trying to say is in some hospitals they are and if it's a big hospital they could be in separate buildings..

That makes sense. Although I'd be surprised if they were unprepared to be able to transfer a pregnant woman to the L&D floor even if they were in different buildings. Especially if it is a big hospital.
