Baby Registry questions

seeing as this is my first child, and i never had a wedding shower registry because hubby and I eloped and thought that would be inappropriate

is it okay to put big ticket items on a registry ?
and
when are you starting yours?

Re: Baby Registry questions

  • Definitely A-OK to put big ticket items on the registry -- maybe no one will buy them, maybe several people will go in together to get them for you, maybe some relative will feel super generous and buy it for you by themselves... But even if no one gets them for you, most registries give you a discount "completion bonus" so you can buy it yourself for a bit less than retail. :)

I probably won't start mine until I've had a chance to survey what we still have from DS#1, and what needs replacing. :) You could start yours now, make it 'private', and fill it with ideas and remove stuff you decide you don't actually want later. It can be hard remembering all the, "Oh! That's a great idea!" stuff.

Definitely ok. You want to make sure that you have a good variety of price points but put everything you plan to buy on your registry. Most have a completion discount afterward bs a rewards program.

We plan to start at 12 weeks, mostly for ourselves to stay organized, but we've already decided on most of the bigger items.

    Edit: spelling
  • Please consider buying used! I was looking at Craigslist prices this week and you can get most baby items for $10 - $25 bucks. Bouncer seats, pack n plays, swings, diaper bags, bath stuff... the list is endless. I plan to start searching for secondhand items in my 2nd trimester.

  • It's a good way to keep everything organized as well. You can just look at your registry and know what still needs purchased. Also you might be surprised that some of those big ticket items might be purchased by someone feeling very generous!

With DS I started a private one right away for the same reasons everyone else mentioned! A bunch of my aunts came together and got our carseat and stroller combo so definitely put big ticket items on there--I actually didn't at first and they called me! What I found is that some people have their traditions of what they want to give, particular family members. Whether that's the crib, stroller, bath stuff, whatever. A range of prices and types of items is ideal!

  • Definitely put big ticket items on there.  For baby showers, bridal showers, and wedding gifts I almost always try to pool resources with friends to buy something more pricey.

  • I agree with PPs. It really helps to have a registry even to organize which items you want/need. I made mine private for DS until I had settled on which items I preferred.

If you want a particular item, definitely register for it. If you're not picky about color or brand, consider getting some things used.

Some people will go together to get a large item, or your may have certain family members who want to contribute something large. Many registries have money-back (gift cards actually) dependent on how much is purchased from the registry as well as completion discounts, so it makes sense to get things through it unless an item is significantly cheaper somewhere else. I registered for a mix of items and a mix of prices so that there was something for everyone if they chose to buy off the registry. Also, be prepared: some or many people will not go by the registry, especially when it comes to clothes.
  • I've also heard to not really register for clothes because people are going to buy them anyways. We haven't started our registry yet but will probably do so in November or December. Heck, we might even wait until after the holidays to "officially" do it.

I live on a. Very secluded island with. No family near me I don't think used is the best option for us as no one uses craigslist where I live about a whole 4000 people where I live
  • Sure! put those items on there! people dont need to buy them if they dont want. Maybe some friends or family members will pull their $ together for the big items.

ALSO, most places offer 10% off after baby is born on registry items, so add add add!

  • I'm putting some high priced items on my registry, but I'm also using it as a list.  I find the registry thing a bit overwhelming.  But also along the same lines as a pp said about Craigslist, also check out your local Good Will and thrift shops.  We have two strollers from the Good Will.  They were fifteen dollars each. One was obviously previously used the other was one of those fancy expensive running/jogging strollers with the wide tires and three wheels.  One of the Good Wills here gets stuff from Target where the boxes might be damaged or something and/or returned without any problems and sells it cheap.  We also got a swing from the Good Will and I bought a Pack and Play from one of my close friends for 20 dollars. .

ya the second hand thing wont work for me, i wish it would but it wont
i live in rural alaska in the middle of literally no where not connected to the main state with 4000 people 1 thirst shop that carries mostly fishing gear , we dont have access to anything except a walmart here, there is no good will here, its a very secluded area
and no one uses craigslist here

so im thinking most of our stuff will come from amazon prime as thats pretty much the only company that ships to where i live

No judgement here on that; it sounds like you really don't have a lot of other options. Not to go off topic, but how do you like living in Alaska? It looks like such a beautiful place.
