Dr won't see me till 12 weeks

I had a miscarriage in August and just found out I'm pregnant again, already. The dr won't see me until I'm 12 weeks. Is this normal? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • Yes, it's normal.  Waiting is hard though!

  • I'm sorry for your previous loss. 12 week wait is normal. Did they follow your beta levels back down to after your miscarriage?

When I miscarried, my doctor checked my beta levels for about 2 weeks to make sure everything was out of my system and no D&C was required.

  • Yep, I see a nurse practitioner at 8/9 weeks and my doctor at 11/12 weeks. They didn't really give me any information at all. I'm definitely anxious about waiting that long and I'm just hoping that everything is going smoothly!

  • I'm sorry for your loss. Sometimes doctors will bring women in who have a history of ectopic, miscarriage etc but it's absolutely common for first appointment to be between 8-12 weeks. There's so very little to be done in the beginning but if you feel 12 weeks is too long you could reasonably find a doc who would bring you in a bit earlier. If it makes you feel any better, the first appointment is really anticlimactic in my experience...a folder of info and a blood draw. Too early for Doppler and ultrasounds aren't a guarantee for anyone until 20 week anatomy scan. Take your vitamins and try to distract yourself...the bump helps :)

  • If your doctor won't see you until that late you can always says you're "unsure" when your last period began. I know it's not ideal but they usually will have you come in so they can see how far along you are! Good luck!
  • I am so sorry for your loss :(  I had an appt at 4-5 weeks (just nurse appt, bloodwork, etc.).  Ultrasound with doctor at 7-8 weeks.  I have friends that have had the same.  So not all doctors wait that long to even see you - especially given your history.
  • I was terribly sick last time and needed to get in and make a management plan before things got bad. My family clinic has OBGYN now and wouldn't see me till 10 weeks. I told them that will not work for me. I found another clinic that got me in within a few days, and we made a plan and got the ball rolling. I'm so glad I spoke up for my needs. I think clinics vary in their timelines, so it's worth asking around.
