Vegetarians or Vegans?

I am sure there's a few in our May 2016 Club :-)
What are your experiences so far? I was afraid i might crave meat (one of my friends did and started eating it again) but that did not happen :-)
My iron levels looked great before, so fingers crossed...

If anyone has some great recipes with beans/ chickpeas, etc, share away! I think I should eat more of those now and I am not feeling to creative at the  moment.

How are you guys feeling? Any tips / recommendations?

  • Wow, I hadn't even considered that I might end up craving meat. So far still vegan! ;)
  • I went through my first pregnancy without craving meat.  I do eat some fish here and there, so maybe that staves off the protein craving for a few weeks at a time.

  • I hadn't eaten red meat in over 5 years, but the cravings were so intense while I was pregnant with my second that I ended up giving in.  I didn't crave it at all during my first pregnancy.  I was anemic with my second, so I think maybe that contributed to my cravings.

  • I knew I wasn't the only one :-)
I hope my iron levels stay up nicely. A friend of mine who ate LOADS of meat got anemic when she was pregnant, so it does not necessarily have to mean if you eat mean you'll be fine , and if you don't you'll get anemic.

I try to eat balanced and make sure I get my protein and my B- vitamins through my food, and I am also taking a prenatal vitamin, so I'm pretty sure that would be fine.

I also think the same applies if you're a vegan. As long as you make sure you get everything your body needs, you're more than fine.

Has anyone thought about how to raise their kids? Will you give them a vegetarian diet???

yup child will be raised on a vegetarian diet,
    vegan myself

i havent craved meat, i dont think i will i cant remember the taste its been so long 6 years now? and i know even if i did it would probably make me violently sick
  • I feel like such a bad vegetarian!!! I had a really dreadful craving and have in. But, since I've been a vegetarian for 15 years, the whole experience didn't end up going well if you can imagine. I was miserable with indigestion for hours. My body can't take another craving like that, but I can't eat any of the recipes I normally have do I'm sneaking my protein and veggies into sauces for pasta. Pasta being the only thing not making me want to throw up. Hope you guys have room for a fellow vegetarian that recently fell off the wagon!
  • Don't beat yourself up! You had a craving, and sometimes that can mean your body showing you what it means.  I am lucky I am not throwing up, "only" nauseous a lot, so I am not so limited in my food choice.

You could also try to get your protein in a smoothie, I have done that a few times now. Throw nuts or silken tofu in the blender with your regular fruit/veg and you can up your protein intake and just drink it :-)

I plan to raise my kid vegetarian, too. I sometimes wonder though, what happens if your child sees other kids eat meat or if it's visiting other children and there's meat for dinner/lunch.  Of course, that's something I should not even think about yet at this very moment...
    I just can't help it :-)

I plan to be straight up honest with why we aren't eating meat , what it is and why we don't eat it

I plan to tell teachers and that kinda thing my kids dietary needs and that it is a serious personal decision and to not interfere with it

As for birthday parties etc I'll bring a veggie pizza or veggie dogs for my little one

Seems pretty easy to me but I've thought a lot about it
  • That sounds like a great way to go about it!  I really like that approach!

  • Ya my mom was always really honest with me and it made me feel respected
Although of course I didn't understand that word than
But after a year of child developmental psychology I know that this type of honesty is the right approach for me and my kids and my parenting method

I'm obviously not going to like make a 6 year old watch peta videos or anything but I'll be honest
  • Yes, I agree. They don't have to watch Earthlings :-)
I remember meeting  a family once with two very young vegetarian kids, and the parents said they never had any issues. The youngest one did not understand yet what was going on, but the older girl (maybe 4 at the time), just said that she loves animals and therefore doesn't eat them.

    I was sooo impressed :-)

I think the harder part will be some of my conservative relatives, who surely believe everyone needs protein/ meat to grow!
But I'll handle them, and I live on the other side of the world anyways, hehe.

  • Plenty of children in India are vegetarians I think western culture is a little lackin in the whole veggie education
I think it is getting more accepted

People like to become experts in nutrition I find lol

Ah well I think teachers and such will get accustom to it

For social outings just being enough for everyone as well not that they will always eat your food you bring but it's a good gesture
Like an xl veggie pizza if say the kids party is a pizza one
Or if it's a bbq party bring your own veggie dogs and veggie burgers and offer them to anyone else if they want one

Just being accommodating to your child's special dietary needs so other parents don't have to Get upset over it
