Rejects the boob

My baby is 8 weeks and we used a pacifier from the beginning. Does anyone else's baby choose to pacify on the pacifier rather than the boob? I have an oversupply and a big letdown so when I latch her on again thinking she's still hungry she gets mad. Could it be she just wants to suck rather than get milk? I don't mind but at times it makes me sad when she rejects me.

Also did anyone else's period come back sooner due to pacifier use? She takes in a lot at one feeding so she's more content in between feedings. I'm thinking it came back because she sleeps more at night and goes longer between feedings during the day and lives her paci.

Re: Rejects the boob

  • I haven't nursed mine in a few weeks because I'm exclusively pumping now (trying to prep him for when I'm gone on business trips). I tried to nurse him the other day, and he has forgotten how to. It made me a little sad.

  • Yea that happens to me sometimes but I figure she's just not hungry! I get a little confused sometimes. Sometimes I put her pacifier in and quickly take it out and latch her on to my boob. If she doesn't take it then I figure she's not hungry
  • My little one has used paci since day one ..during the night she will use me to pacify ..but during the day, she prefers her paci. If you have a forceful let down, try pumping prior to nursing!
  • My 8 week old is doing the same thing. We have given him a bottle since he was 5 weeks and now all he will do when the boob is offered is scream and cry at it until he gets a bottle. He has only been doing this for a couple days but I would rather he nurse asich as possible.
  • If you pump before nursing, your oversupply problem will worsen.  The best way to fix your oversupply is to make sure baby completely drains one breast before switching to the other.  This is hard, because if you have an oversupply problem, baby will usually act fussy while breastfeeding and act like she wants to switch from one to the other.  You really have to work at it -- make sure she only takes one breast until it is *completely* empty, even if that means that she will only feed from one breast all day.  You will feel incredibly engorged in the other breast, then, after a week or so, your oversupply problems will diminish.  (& baby will have a much easier time feeding -- no fussing, no choking, less gassy baby, she'll get the fattier hind milk and so she will be fuller longer.)

We don't use pacifiers and my period came back at 6 weeks.  Congrats on being so fertile!!  I would take it as a sign of great health.  :)
  • @wheresilenceismusic thank you. I am very grateful to be fertile. Despite struggling with endometriosis for years I was still able to have a normal consistent period. We were able to conceive this little one on our honeymoon. We were nervous we wouldn't be able to have children right away.
  • We also used a pacifier since he was 3 days old and he continues to use it however I do not give him the pacifier unless he starts to suck his hand while trying to fall asleep. He also used bottles since week 5. I have no problem with breastfeeding however I do use a nipple shield, try use a nipple shield on your breast to switch the baby from the pacifier onto your breast. And I believe your baby should slowly recognize you and become easier to feed!
