Blood panel-positive for Down syndrome

I'm 16 weeks and just got my blood work back with s positive testing for Down syndrome. Does anyone know more about this? I just went back for more blood work to be done for cutlet her genetic testing and I have an early ultrasound being done next week too. I know there is a possibility for a false positive and that this test doesn't mean my baby will have Down syndrome but I'm so emotional and scared and just do t know what to think :( any thoughts or words of wisdom out there?

Re: Blood panel-positive for Down syndrome

  • So sorry to hear this. Try remember it's not for definite though! Did you have a NT scan already? Thoughts and prayers to you.

January siggy challenge - Pregnant lady problems

  • My brother-in-law and his wife had this result with my second niece and were referred to a specialist for additional testing. They found out that she didn't actually have Downs and was born completely fine.

I'll be keeping you in my prayers!

  • Hope you get more answers soon.  With these testing, they always tell you it is XX% accurate to give them a little wiggle room.  Sending prayers your way.
  • Thank you ladies! So glad for all these postings! Y'all are keeping me sane! Just reading and learning what I can and focusing on the fact that it's not certain and we will have answers soon.
  • I know it's hard, but try not to stress too much.  I've heard of so many false positives with these first tests.  My cousin's came out positive for downs, and then she got an ultrasound where they told her it looked like the baby had it as well.  She found out with the next few blood tests that the baby did NOT have downs and was perfectly healthy!

So keep your head up.  And if your baby does end up having down syndrome, I'm sure he or she will be beautiful anyways :)

  • Hi ladies I thought I'd post in here to see if anyone has experience with maternal serum testing coming back high. I just got the call that ours came back with a 1/133 chance of Down syndrome. I go for a level 2 ultrasound on Thursday where they do the anatomy scan at the same time and check for additional DS markers. I'm not trying to freak out too much... but I am. I'm a numbers girl and if we had 133 babies 132 would be healthy and 1 would have Down syndrome, which is reassuring.

I've actually thought about this with my last when his ultrasound had a soft marker for DS and the parental challenges of a baby with DS don't scare me but the physical side effects (heart defects, sight/vision problems, etc).

Also how'd y'all stay sane waiting for tests and test results?!?
  • @jenniferamcooper sorry you're going through this. Our baby has a soft marker and until we did the Harmony Test we were worried but comforted in a similar way to you by considering the odds that our baby was perfect as opposed to the odds that there was a problem. I've no real advice other than that it's admirable of you to be so positive! You could check out the high risk pregnancy board and see if you have any luck there with someone who knows what you're going through. Best of luck :)

  • It's not always 100%. My mother had had several positive scans for Down Syndrome and other issues when she was pregnant with me, so she spent a lot of her pregnancy visiting specialists throughout it.  However, the only physical issue that was wrong with me was a mild case of mitral valve prolapse that never really caused any issues with my health.
