pedicures

So I've read a few places that the massage during a pedicure can cause a woman to go into labor. I've been getting them regularly over the summer, but the last one I had about 3 weeks ago, the tech kind of reprimanded me for not telling him that I was pregnant. (I thought it was blatantly obvious, I was 35 weeks at the time! One of the other female techs asked how far along I was and he looked shocked, then told me that I should have mentioned earlier that I was pregnant, before he worked on me.)

Anyway, now that I'm full term I'm a little hesitant. I don't WANT to go into labor right now (I'm only 38 weeks), but I do want a pedicure and could use the massage! Is this just an old wives tale? Has anyone actually gone into labor due to a foot massage? I would prefer not to have jacked up feet when I go to the hospital, plus I know it will be a while before I can get one after the baby is born...

Re: pedicures

  • I've never heard of this and I get pedicures all the time. I just went Saturday at 36 weeks and no body ever says anything. Plus I make my hubby rub my feet all the time, so hopefully that's not the case LOL!

  • From what I was told, there are pressure points near the ankles that any masseuse should know about, and avoid. I'm getting a massage this weekend, and the place I go to won't go near that area on purpose.
  • I'm 38 weeks and I'm going to get a pedicure on Friday. My nail girl is also pregnant & due 3 weeks after me so we've been chatting about it every visit. I wouldn't read too much into it

This. There are specific pressure points above the ankle. As long as they aren't applying pressure to one very specific spot for more than 30 seconds at a time, you should be fine. I got one last week and will go again in a week or two.
  • I've heard this before so I asked my doctor if it was true and she laughed and said that was silly. She said that's just a wise tail and if it does happen to induce labor, then it's just a coincidence and that pedicures are safe at all times during pregnancy.
  • Agree with PP. My dr laughed too- said enjoy the pedicures and foot rubs from your hubby while you have the time!
  • I actually went into labor the day I got a pedicure that included ankle massage, but I'm sure it was a coincidence!
  • It's probably a wives tale, BUT, when I was pregnant with my first, my girlfriend came into town and took me to a high end salon for the most glorious pedicure, and I went into labor that night!
  • I just got one last week and it was one of the best decisions I have made lately. My only concern was if it would be a waste of money since I won't be wearing flip flops much more as it is getting cooler out
  • I've gotten them throughout my pregnancy :) I think there are certain specific areas they are supposed to avoid, but unless they are really working on that area then I think you are fine.
  • I get a pedicure every two weeks, no baby yet and I've trying everything to coax her out I think you are okay!
  • At the spa I go to there is a sheet you fill out in the relaxation room prior to your pedicure. It asks what kind of pedicure, scent you prefer, nail polish color, if you are pregnant and how many weeks or if you have diabetes. I think they just take extra care. I had one last week at 35+ and they rescheduled me for 39 weeks so I am look fresh for when baby girl gets here!!
  • There are certain acupressure points that are supposed to induce labor. That's why most places refuse to give a deep tissue massage to pregnant ladies. That being said, I've had massages and pedicures throughout this pregnancy and my first.
