Varying Shades of Pregnancy Test Lines

Have any of you other moms to be noticed varying shades on pregnancy tests that you have taken? I hope I am just being paranoid but I noticed that the positive line of the test I took at about 5 weeks was way darker than the result of the one I took around 8 weeks. Since the test works off detecting HCG I wasn't sure if the test would produce a darker positive line as your levels increase. Is this something to be concerned about?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Re: Varying Shades of Pregnancy Test Lines

  • It's called the hook effect. Apparently at a certain point your hcg levels are too high for the hpt to process and gives you a false faint line or even a false negative. The line will only show up dark if the sample is really diluted.

I think best advice would be to stop poas because it will drive you crazy.

  • Hi, I have heard about the hook effect too... I think it happens around 8 or 9 weeks. May I ask why ur still testing at 8 weeks pregnant?
  • Thanks ladies, that's good to know.
Honestly, I have no reason to be testing but I had one test left over. I am anxiously awaiting my first ultrasound which is this Friday. I keep having very vivid dreams/nightmares (which I know come along with pregnancy) but I guess I needed some reassurance.
  • I understand, the thought of miscarrying again or something being wrong scares me every day. The best reassurance I have is each day that goes by, ur chances of miscarrying go down less and less. For u, at over 8 weeks I think it's less than 5 percent! How exciting your ultrasound is this Friday!! Good luck!!
