Extreme rib pain and vomiting

For the past two days I have severe rib pain on the left side and I cannot digest my dinner and end up throwing. I had mild nausea from the beginning and I never got to the point of vomiting. At 24weeks anyone else experiencing this ? Should I be worried and call my doc?
P.s I feel 0 energy after vomiting. What do you ladies recommend. Should I take more fluids ?

Re: Extreme rib pain and vomiting

  • I was like this last week and ended up in hospital due to dehydration, I would call your doctor to be safe.

  • I think you should call your doctor. In the meantime, you should drink more fluids. It can only help. Good luck.
  • Definitely drink more water all day. Is the rib pain in your muscles like they are stretching or more like a stomach ache type pain up by your ribs?

If it's muscle pain that is more consistent and doesn't occur directly after eating, it's probably unrelated. I had a few days where my rib pain was unbelievable, I couldn't even sit in a car without basically crying. It did mess with my morning sickness but I've had that the entire time anyways.

If it is related to your meal times/not as consistent then you definitely want to mention it to your doctor as soon as possible. Especially is if the throwing up is new for you or just started recurring with this. It sounds to me like it could be really bad heartburn/reflux if you are eating big meals but there's so many different things it could be.

Talk to your doctor either way, that's what they are there for :)
  • Thanks ladies for the response. I called the doctor and she told me to sit in warm water for an hour , which helped. And for vomiting etc I have to stay away from spicy food and take small meals. The rib pain is still there , but not that severe. ☺
  • I was wondering about the outcome of the rib pain? I'm 25 weeks and having pretty significant rib pain on the left side. It doesn't make me vomit but I do have trouble eating (not feeling hungry even when I should)sometimes. I have what feel like bruised spots under my left breast but it's the whole rib that hurts, even around my back. I'm waiting for the dr to call back but does anyone have an idea what this might be? It seems to be aggravated by sitting or standing too long and once it starts only heat and a massage make it settle down. This is so incredibly painful. If anyone has experienced this, please share with me.
  • Maybe Costochondritis? I had it after my pregnancy with my daughter. It's never fully gone away and some days I still have flare ups. It feels exactly as pp described.. Like a bruise. Hope you all get some relief!
  • @bella2210 I have the same thing on my left side.  It is definitely aggravated by sitting at my desk all day at work, as I had a reprieve from the extreme pain over the long weekend.  Mine varies from a dull ache to sharp shooting pains. It's pretty terrible.

  • I'm sorry you're feeling this but I'm also relieved to know I'm not the only one. Thank you!
  • @bella2210 what did the doctor say it was? I am having the same thing and am just miserable.
  • I just was admitted to the OB ward at the hospital this morning for these same symptoms. Mine ended up being a kidney infection.
I had gotten really scared, because after being sick and in excruciating pain all night, baby didn't move at all for about three hours this morning.
The hospital kept me for about 4 hours, and just monitored movement and heartbeat on the baby. My doctor says to ALWAYS err on the side of caution. (We are so blessed, because even in a huge medical system, our doctor answers all of his pages and delivers all his patients' babies--whether he's on call or not.)
  • @meliea86 the dr thinks the baby is pushing on my ribs. She suggested putting ice on my ribs and lying down. She said the baby will move away from the cold. I've been trying it but I'm not sure it's helping. I go in on Wednesday so I'll have a better answer then, hopefully. They'll check out my fundal height and his position and have more answers and solutions (fingers crossed). I'll post what they tell me Wednesday. I'm sorry you're dealing with it too, it's so awful.
  • I am 25 weeks and have been having this off and on for a few weeks. The pain gets quite bad especially after a big meal and at night when I'm (trying to!) sleep. I ended up speaking to my obstetrician about it and he sent me for an ultrasound to rule out liver / kidney / gallbladder problems. Ultrasound was all clear but I'm glad I got it all checked out. My dr says it's a combo of heartburn and muscular pain from uterus getting up under ribs. I have tried eating smaller and less greasy meals this week and it has helped the rib pain and heartburn.
