Holy Soreness!!

Yesterday, I was induced at 39 weeks due to high amniotic fluid. The time from when the pitocin was started to when he was born was about 2 1/2 hours. About 5 or 6 pushes and he was out (he was 8 lbs, 3 oz). Today, I feel like I ran a marathon and was then hit by a car. Unfortunately, because labor progressed quickly and he was a good-sized baby, I got a second degree tear. My son was 10 weeks early and only 3 lbs, 5 oz and I was not sore like this (for obvious reasons). Anyone else have this experience? I am just shocked about how sore and in pain I am. Sigh.

Re: Holy Soreness!!

  • Congrats on the birth of your little boy! As a FTM I have no idea what the norm is but I know that being sore is part of it. You will start feeling better, along with anything the day after and day 2 are usually the worst and then it's up hill from there. Get as much rest in as you can. Don't neglect yourself.

  • FTM here also but I've received a lot of advice from women in my family who had tears. They swear by padsicles lol Maxi pads soaked in witch hazel and aloe and then placed in a freezer. It helps with the swelling. One of my cousins actually told me recovery was worse then delivery for her.
  • I got a second degree tear. Definitely stay on top of those pain meds and use the numbing spray!
  • Just out of curiosity, what were your fluid levels. I ask because mine have been creeping up so I'm wondering when you were induced for it. Thanks!
  • Yes def us the numbing spray!!! and remember to use warm water with the peri bottle ! I also had a second degree tear! Also I over did it when I got home with the steps, some days are better than others. But a week out from having him I feel pretty good!
Some days I am still sore but over all i feel good.

I also had second degree with my first and second the numbing spray, pain meds, and ice packs. It's rough those first couple days but I was surprised at how quickly I recovered.

  • Thanks, all. I am still in pain and can't walk as much as iI'd like. I went to Target yesterday and had to wrap up my shopping before I was done. My incision definitely hurts here and there and I have continued to take Tylenol. I also have pain in what I believe are muscle strains from pushing. I was high-risk while pregnant and couldn't exercise much. I had an epidural and didn't feel much. When they had me pull my knees up for pushing (which the nurses and my husband helped with), my knees were pulled beyond my usual flexibility and I couldn't feel it at that moment. My fluid levels peaked at 31 AFI (it had dropped to around 22 AFI on the day of my induction). I was induced at 39 weeks.

  • You want ibuprofen, not Tylenol to combat the swelling.

  • I had a 3rd degree with my daughter and it's rough but I used the ice pads (if they don't offer then take a large pad put under water then freeze) also witch hazel and the dermablast numbing spray
  • I wasn't even told the "degree" of my tears, but they hurt like hell! I know I had two small ones and one big one. My whole vagina felt like raw skirt steak for a few days (I had my son the 25th). It still hurts over a week later. The bottle is your best friend, and I reccomend Tucks pads. They help along with the spray. If you can, soak some pads in witch hazel and freeze them. Definitely helps with swelling.
