Through the night

How do you get your baby to sleep through the night? Her doctor said for her size she should be sleeping through the night. Her normal routine is, eat, lotion, change to nighty, diaper, and see if she wants to eat anymore. Then if she isn't asleep from eating (hasn't been lataley) she fights me for 30 mins to fall asleep even though she is tired. She will wake up every few minutes for another half hour and need put back to sleep.

Once she is out, she stays asleep for 5 to 7 hours. It's always random. Afterward I'll feed her and she'll fall back asleep. From then, it is every 2 hours. I've tried to just rock her back to sleep, but she'll start to scream until she is feed. Any advice?

Re: Through the night

  • Sounds normal to me. My babe will sleep a good 4 to 6 hours then wake up, eat, go back to sleep and is up again in 2 to 3 hours.

  • I thought so too until our doctor said that with her size she should go all night.
  • Nope, no sleeping through here either. We change into Jammie and feed, then he lets me know when he's ready for bed. I put him in his crib between 7-8 and he falls asleep until at least 10:30 sometimes later. Then he's usually up at 2:45, 4:45, and up for the day by 6:15.

  • DS has been sleeping from like 9-7 the past few weeks. We usually put him in his pajamas, then I'll nurse him and he falls asleep while eating. Once were sure he's really asleep we'll put him in his swing. He likes to be snug when he sleeps so I think that's why he sleeps so good in his swing. He startles a lot and doesn't like to be swaddled so if he was in his crib he'd probably wake up more.

He's also a big baby, 9 lb 12 oz at birth and probably over 15 lbs at 12 weeks. I've heard that bigger babies sleep better because they have bigger stomached so they stay full longer.
  • She was 9.8 lbs when she was born. 14 lbs at 9 weeks (10 now). She doesn't do bad in her crib, so I guess that is good.
  • It's easy to get discouraged, the whole sleeping thing is pretty tough. I bet we're all at the point where we'd do anything for a solid night's sleep! I expect to keep waking up to nurse twice a night for a long time, but keep reminding myself that someday he will sleep through til morning!

☝️this is exactly what my little guy does. He's 11.5 weeks
  • 5 hours is considered sleeping through the night. I would kill for even 4 hours of sleep.

  • Yes 4-5 hours is great...6 or 7 is better...even 3 can still be normal... whatever! So many of you/us want so much more & expect these consistent patterns & routines etc etc..... Blah blah blah 8-} THEY ARE GROWING & CHANGING BABIES!!!! ...just saying...
  • Lol. Thank you ladies. I guess I should stop worrying about my baby girl not sleeping through the night. I'm a stay at home mom so I don't need too much sleep. I-)
  • My first didn't sleep through the night until 11 months...you're doing fine.
  • My What to Expect: The First Year book says that yes, metabolically STTN is possible around 11lbs but that most babies, especially BF babies will still be waking at least once or twice for another month or two. It says if they're still waking 3+ times a night by months 4 onwards then it's likely they're just used to eating then, and at that point it would be good to take measures to drop feedings.

Our LO is 12 weeks , probably right around 11 lbs and usually sleeps 10pm - 3/4am. After that long stretch though, like other posters said, he will be up again in 2 or 3 hours.

When he actually sleeps 7:30pm - 7:30am it will be a joyous day. I shall eat a cake that day.
  • I think we are all doing great! Mine goes from 9pm to between 2-4am depending on the night. I think that's awesome! It wasn't that long ago that he was in my belly without a care in the world!
  • My daughter slept from 9pm to 5:45am the other night. The night after 9 -4 then last night 9-5. She's 11 weeks and weighs about 13 and a half pounds. She's on 6 ounce bottles every 2-3 through the day.
  • LO usually sleeps from 9 or 10 pm to 3 or 4 am, then to 6 or 7 am. Sooo much better than it used to be!
  • Ugh. Ever since I posted this, she has been worse. Only every 2-3 hours. I'm really sorry I complained and what to go back. :-O She has been going every 3 hours during the day instead of 2, so it's something!
  • My baby has been sleeping through the night sine she was 6 weeks. I change her diaper, feed her, then put her to bed in her crib at about 9:30 or 10. Then she sleeps until 8 or 9.
  • Also, my baby weighs right under 10 pounds, she eats 6oz every 5 hours and I try to keep her up after 7:30 so she will be good and tired by bedtime.
  • Keeping a baby up so they sleep doesn't really work on most babies. It will make them over tired and fight to go to sleep even more.
  • My baby is 11 weeks and 15lbs. She sleeps from 8:30-3. Then again until about 6. She's a big girl but still not doing the whole night through. She EBF so that may be why.
  • @bwarren1210, what @AKOL0 said is right!

^^This also is pretty much what my little gal does too!!. Usually from 11-5ish Wakes eats, and back to sleep for 2-3 more hrs. I thought that was sleeping through the night! Lol! Coodos to the ladies who get more hrs of sleep then that!! Haha awesome!

@bwarren1210 Wait...sorry maybe I'm reading this wrong.... But would that mean your LO would only get about 3 feedings a day is she sleeps from 10pm to 8/9am and she feeds 6oz every 5 hrs... For some reason that doesn't quite add up in my sleep deprived head lol. My doctor told me between 22-30oz a day for LO and between 5-8 feedings is fairly normal so to me that seems a little off no?

After the math I think she's getting at least 24 oz. 6 oz at 8am, 6 oz at 12ish, 6oz at 5ish and 6 oz at 10 pm before bed. It's between the 22-30 your doctor recommends.
  • My baby just turned 12 weeks and he sleeps through the night probably wakes up 3times to feed but I recommended you feed them as much as possible during the day and by the time bedtime rolls around nurse a little and it usually puts him to sleep from 7pm-9:30 then more nursing and then he fall asleep until the wee hours of the morning. I find this method to work wonders especially since I returned for a semester of college and have an 8 o'clock class!! However I think it just depends on your little one. Mine personally gives me no trouble and is not really a fussy baby
