Flu at 38wks help!

Nearing 38 weeks and I'm coming down with a nasty flu. Started as sore throat didn't think much of it then progressed into bad migraines and congestion. Other than mussinex and teas don't know what else to take. Don't want to go into labor all sicky and icky!!!!! Help!!!!

  • Echinacea tea with honey.

  • Ugh that sucks!  Just rest up, and hopefully labor will wait until after you've recovered!  I had a nasty cold last week and worried about the same thing.  I hope you feel much better before baby comes!

Back in January when I had influenza, the only thing that seemed to help me is rest and I drank hot water with honey and lemon oil. I'm sure fresh lemon or lemon juice would work as well. VERY soothing to a sore throat! I've also seen that if you can find local honey, that is best.

Edited to add: I hope you get to feeling better! At this point, any small thing can really make us feel miserable. Good luck!
  • I'm in the same boat, Mama. I've been drinking lots of oj and eating chicken noodle soup. It seems to be helping!
  • Gargling diluted apple cider vinegar does WONDERS for a sore throat. I though it was going to be a joke, one of those home remedies that really is nothing more than a placebo affect, but it really, really works! Fruits like honeydew and cantaloupe are high in vit C and less harsh than oranges. I'm sorry you're sick. I thought this head cold was bad! Can't imagine a flu this far along! Good luck, mama!
  • I am in the same boat! The worst part is that my mom gave it to me! She came over sick last week, and "didn't think it would be a problem." Sigh.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies! Also, I have a dumb FTM question. Can having a cold/flu hurt the baby? I am 1 day shy of 38 weeks.

  • I'm assuming not as long as you take care of yourself and monitor your fever and such. I asked about a flu SHOT which is essentially allowing the virus into your system and was told I could get it the day before delivery and it wouldn't be an issue. I would just phone into your OB though so they know what's going on and can help give you regulations. That way, too, if you go into labor they are already aware of the virus and can take whatever precautions they need to.
  • Can you call your doctor and ask about getting the antiviral drug (like Tamiflu)? It is supposed to shorten the severity and duration of the flu.
