It won't be long for us. Right now I pretty much leave the seat in the car because it is too heavy.
When we get a convertible seat we'll opt for either the Britax or Chicco NextFit Zip. We've had several Britax car seats & loved them up until the last one. We ended up returning that one because the straps were really hard to tighten. At that point we bought a Chicco NextFit, and we really like that one as well. It comes now with a zip off seat cover to allow for easy cleaning.
They aren't the smallest seats but have good safety ratings. If you need something slimmer (need for three car seats across) I believe the Diono works. So that may be something to think about if you may possibly run into that situation.
We will be switching to a graco convertible seat soon. We already bought it because I was able to get $50 off with the sale at babies r us. We are just waiting until LO can sit up on his own better. We would like for him to be able to sit in the high chair or cart when we go out.
